More sad news

Martin, formerly drummer with The Wonder Stuff, has died after a motorbike accident, aged just 41. In what is already a sad week, I feel upset about this, as I spent a lot of quality time with the band in the early 90s, on the road in Europe and America. Martin was a gentle soul, who was brave, sensitive and singleminded enough to consent to be interviewed specifically about his wife, Penny, and son, Barney, in Select in 1993. I don't think the rest of the band thought it was such a good idea, but Martin was his own man. Our thoughts are with his family.

I too was very saddened to hear this news, he was not only an amazingly talented drummer but seemed like a very nice bloke. He once held the door open for me at the Astoria when I saw Eat play there years ago. Not many of your Indie stars would do that, would they.

Also, heard today that Gene Pitney had passed away this morning, in his hotel room in Wales somewhere. Whilst he's not everyone's cup of tea, you can't deny that he had talent. Very sad.

Interesting to read Gene Pitney's obituary in the Independent today; he seemed like a good bloke. I never knew he wrote Rubber Ball or Hello Mary Lou - both favourites from my childhood. (I'm only 35 but the 50s were big in the late 70s - much as the early 80s are big now.) I feel bad for always confusing him with PJ Proby.

Ooh, did he write Hello, Mary Lou? My dad used to sing that :-)
I read an obituary, too. Nice chap, I think. So was Martin Gilks by the sound of it, although I didn't know anything about him until yesterday - family man.
Yeah, doesn't sound like it's been the best of weeks, really.

Andrew - hope you're ok.
