Beware free gifts

The Guardian are giving away free wall charts all week. All credit to them for resisting DVDs and teach-yourself-Spanish CDs, but today's Garden Birds chart - the one I was looking forward to (after all, who needs one on sharks?) - is incomplete. Where's the nuthatch?

That's better.

I've never seen a nuthatch, but we do have tree creepers. I'm a goldfinch man myself.

I like Robins, of which there is a very handsome one appearing on the wallchart. Actually, i like sparrows as well. I always go for the underdog, me.

No birds have visited my new bird table yet, but this morning I saw a squirrel trying to knaw through one of the feeders. Felt a bit sorry for the chap so I didn't scare him off. Where are all the birds....?

All I get are pigeons, who poo all over my balcony - one even laid an egg in a bucket with a few pitiful twigs by way of a nest... what I would give for a lovely nuthatch, sparrow or squirrel. Though my lovely Sophie Cat would scare them. Pity she won't scare the pigeons. But nothing phases them.
