Judy

More pin-ups
Yes, I know it's Sally, but these back-cover pin-ups come from the Judy Picture Library. We should have guessed the recently-discussed Sally Geeson would have merited one - it's from 1971. A "pretty young British actress."

And this one is from 1973, "often seen on your TV screen", although to me she looks younger in this shot, unless it's just the pigtails.
And ... just to show how subtly Judy had changed by the 80s, here are the pretty young pin-ups from an issue in 1985:

The first band I was ever sent abroad to interview at the NME in what must have been 1989, as it was for their Thunder And Consolation album. We were in France somewhere, can't remember where, and I've no record of the piece in my files. Good to see Robb Heaton on the right, God rest his soul.
You might ask who Judy would have on their back cover today, were the comic still going.

Johnny Borrell. No question.
AC. You obviously have too much free time on your hands. Have you considered a job in radio ?
Back in 1987 I was drawing front covers for Judy. There's a copy in the January and December archives on my blog...
Your drawings are fantastic, Sean, and the Judy connection is a real surprise. I can't believe you were doing published comic art while you were still at college. (I did some cartoon work while I was still at college, but it was bread-and-butter corporate stuff and the occasional strip for the London Institute in-house newspaper!) I used to be really abreast of comics in the late 80s and early 90s, but I drifted away. I feel like buying something you've drawn now.
Thanks for your kind words Andrew.
I actually started drawing for Bunty when I was fifteen and still at school. If you'd like to read anything of mine I'd recommend Marvel Zombies for dopey fun or Criminal for a more serious story. A trailer for Criminal is linked to from my blog, or the whole first issue is downloaable from Marvel.com.
Sean - just been nosing around your blog and there's some amazing stuff in there!
Thanks for that.
What a shame that by the 80's there were no more captions to go along with the band photos.
Sean and Andrew. I am in complete awe of anyone who can draw well. My "drawings" still resemble those of a three year old and I was robbed in my last Art Exam when I was marked third from bottom. I had hoped to come in right at the bottom on the basis that if you are going to be bad at something it's better to be the worst in the class than just mediocre.
Kaiser Chiefs I reckon. And for TV stars maybe Billie Piper?
Andrew, hope this isn't too weird but I've scanned and posted what I assume is the piece in question, here, http://the-third-blog.blogspot.com/
I've got all NMEs from 89 and fortunately one with the words New Model Army on the cover was near the top of the pile, scanning it took a few minutes (bit of a nightmare using the blogger editor but nevermind, quicker than typing it out, possibly).
Woo-hoo! Marvellous photographs you've dug up there, Andrew.
A few laughter lines, a thinner face and it's Sally as she is now.
As for the pigtails... Let's not even go there.
Is this the first sign of New Model Army rehabilitation? I loved em and I don't mind saying it. In a world where Duran duran get awards, surely it's time they were brought in from the cold (which, granted, they were always dressed for).
Thanks for the scans, Simon. It's great to see the old piece again. And yes, NMA deserve more recognition. Remember when they were on Top Of The Pops and Justin wore a t-shirt that said something like "Only stupid bastards take heroin" and they taped out the word "bastards"? Am I remembering correctly?
