Flooded

Boo. The office that I rent flooded over weekend. My laptop has died in the downpour. It's all very annoying. Excuse me if I don't post for a bit. I'm having it seen to.

Floods are so passe these days, if it would of been a couple of weeks ago you would of been on the news and everything.

I'm taking my laptop to a computer menders today. On the phone, they were pessimistic about saving the laptop but cautiously optimistic about recovering data. We shall see. I backed up all my files (ie. my writing archive) about two months ago. Yes, I should do it every day. The thing I most want to recover is my address book, to be honest.

Bear with me at what is a very difficult time.

And the office smells.

Dammit... I'm in Doncaster so I feel your pain. Haha.

Seriously though, hope you get all the important stuff back.

Best to sync your address book with your phone / iPod. Good luck!

That's a bad break - hope it works out OK. There are some very good data recovery companies out there so don't give up too soon.

Sorry to hear that Andrew. I hope you get your data back and possibly the use of your laptop back as well. It is incredibly difficult when these things happen.

It's like I've suffered a bereavement! Your good wishes are much appreciated. Laptop being professionally dried out as we speak. Fingers crossed.

That news of the flood cheered me up. I had a close call in Gloucestershire yesterday nearly get sucked up by a twister.

Almost as bad for me is my white duvet that is proving hard to clean after spilling chocolate on it. Vanish is not as good as in the tv adverts.

I have this image in my head of a junior PC 'technician' holding your laptop upside down whilst fanning it with a small domestic hairdryer, whilst his boss sits in the corner and prepares a large bill...

Sorry to hear about that Andrew.

If it's any consolation at all, the first time I read your blog I thought it said that your 'lapdog' had died.

What a bizarre image that was.

You'd think they could make them waterproof wouldn't you, offices. Regaining stuff that you'd feared was lost is a very nice thing so hope that happens, and compensates for any large bills.

Andrew if this is all dragging on a bit, companies like http://www.easyrestore.co.uk/index.htm may be able to help. Google "data recovery" in UK pages for many more.

Eek! Bad luck Andrew. Hope you manage to salvage everything.

On the upside, I finally got around to reading your new book - it's great, so thanks!

Chris Burgess's comment just made me do one of those 'lol' things.

Andrew Collins with a lapdog is a fine image.
