Top of the world

WTC

I was just sorting through an old box of photos and ephemera, searching for something else, and I came across this seemingly innocuous ticket stub. It reminds me why keeping odd things in boxes is not such a daft idea: just holding it in my hand sent a little shiver up my spine. Especially having just watched Mike Leigh's High Hopes, which ends with Mrs Bender (played by Edna Dore), exclaiming, "Top o' the world," when her son Cyril takes her up to the roof of his King's Cross block of flats. I believe I'm right in saying that I was in New York to interview the cast of Devil's Advocate in June, 1997, and travelled up to the top of the World Trade Center in downtime. Hard to imagine it gone.

On a similar note I have a photo (which appears on my screensaver at random intervals) of four of us taken in the TOTW restaurant just two weeks before Sept 11. Always sends a shiver through me thinking what happened to the waiter that took the shot.

Al, you win (although it's not a competition, obviously).

A couple of months back I was looking through a box of photos to try and find one I took of sunset sunlight illuminated the edge of the Chrysler Building and came across the shots taken from the WTC observation deck.

There were also shots taken from up on the roof. It wasn't a particularly blustery day as I recall - 17 years ago now - but the pictures are all at a slant from the wind blowing.

Madness.

Even though I have vertigo I braved the WTC. I have mug and "lucky" penny to prove it. You can't but help and link you visit to what happened latter it's only human.

I was on the roof 17 years ago as well May 1990, it was very windy
There is a programme on channel 4 this month about the search for survivors in the car parks and shops directly after the towers came down
