Merry Christmas

Unbelievable. Apologies to anybody who comes here regularly, but the previous post descended into puerile abuse and I was forced to shut it down temporarily (for the record, unless he/she was also posting anonymously, this had nothing to do with "Stockhausen and Waterman", none of whose comments I had to remove). This keeps happening. I'm going to continue blogging, but I'm going to have to leave Comment Moderation on, as I'm spending half my time removing anonymous abusive posts at the moment. It's bloody tiresome, and it's taking all the fun out of it. As previously stated, I write stuff on here because I enjoy it. Unfortunately, because it's posted under my own name, and because I operate on the fringes of the public domain, this makes me fair game for abuse. "Collins, you're a fucking knob," ran the contribution that broke the camel's back. How does one respond to that? "No, you are!" I'm sticking with the previous analogy: you're round my house, talking about stuff, and if you're round my house, you have a bit of respect for me, and for others. This is not a forum. Bad Science is a forum. The Comedy Forum is a forum. The British Sitcom Guide. Comment Is Free. Any number of BBC forums. But you have to register to join a forum, and you can be thrown out. Anybody can post on here, under any pseudonym they like, with no comeback, no email address. It's actually more open than a forum. So the only way to stop a decent dialogue descending into abuse or just childish idiocy is to regulate it. I do so with a heavy heart, as it will involve a queueing system, and goes against my instinct for free speech. But I am so close to being worn down into the ground by it, it's for the best. Those who seek to call me a fucking knob only do so because it's public. If that luxury is taken away, they soon go away. (Calling someone a fucking knob in private is no fun, as who will be impressed if there's no one to see or hear it?)

Andrew, really sorry that your open and interactive blog has attracted so many tossers. Very sad the pleasure some people seem to get from just being abusive and nasty.

Andrew - I check your blog most days during my lunch hour and enjoy the read. I'm sad that yet again you've had to moderate your comments because of the actions of a few. It really is pathetic that people would waste their time and others time to be abusive. I hope you don't give up the blog. I've learnt quite a bit from your insights during the course of this year (since I started reading), and it would be a shame to miss the opportunity to learn much more in the future.
Don't let the buggers get you down. Keep your spirits up, and have a cracking xmas and new year. Here's to 2008.
I actually really hate Comment Moderation, but needs must.
Not again! It's nutter central round here now. You can't breathe without abuse.
Merry Christmas to you to.
Shame you had to disallow anonymous comments, but most of the blogs you link to don't either. Hope you don't have to spend too much time in comment moderation. And thanks for metaphorically inviting us round your house.
It's a real shame that comment moderation's been enabled, but needs must.
Merry Christmas, everyone! It's getting exciting now!
Merry Christmas to you Andrew Collins, and to all the NICE people who post here.
My second year of enjoying your blog draws to a close and I think its a real shame you're having to apply the knob filter once more. (I have to admit that when the threads degenerate I become less likely to post, simply because once the focus of the discussion has been lost its pretty well lost for good.)
Have a really good Christmas and remember, don't eat all your selection boxes in one go!
Merry Christmas, Andrew.
It beggars belief that people still feel the need to leave puerile comments on blogs... after all, what does it really achieve?
Anyway, please keep posting, because it's very enjoyable read
Merry Christmas to you Andrew, I hope it is abuse free and happy.
Merry Christmas Andrew and, as someone else has said - try not to let the idiots get you down.
Merry Christmas. I loved the Billy post the other day.
Merry Christmas Andrew and all the best for 2008.
Afternoon,
And a very merry Chrimbo to you.
I thought I was having problems getting just getting spammed to buggery - but at least it's not people calling me a knob. Errr... yet.
Interestingly alot of my spam has suddenly turned into celebrity spam. I have deleted Bill Nighy, Will Smith and Lisa Snowdon in just the past few days. Oddly, none of it seems to be advertising anything, so... why ?
Take care,
Ian TB
Unfortunately, the interweb shows us humans at our worst a lot of the time, so I love finding the pockets where mindless gittery has yet to find a home - this blog was such a place. Too bad you have been found, and I hope that the abusive simpletons find a new home in the new year.
Seasons greetings Andrew, I trust you to moderate as you wish, may all your Christmasses be knobhead-free.
Jon
Aren't terms of abuse interesting?
Crude as it is, 'fucking knob' is a description of an item doing what it is designed to do (well unless you think the knob is a door handle and then you off into a strange land of fetish)
So if this rule of insult works across the board you could call someone a 'stirring spoon' or a 'driving car'.
I'm current on a lot of lemsip.
I'd really like to come round your house Andrew, I'd also bring some Tunnocks Teacakes. Still got to read pt.3 of your auto, I am re-reading pt.2 if that's any good.
regards of the season
James
