Newsletter

If I did a newsletter, this would be on it.
I'm doing a gig. Robin Ince has kindly asked me to appear on the bill of his School For Gifted Children night at Battersea Arts Centre in South London. I have a ten minute slot, and I think I shall talk about serial killers. It's on Monday 28 January and the full lineup includes Darren Hayman (formerly of Hefner and The French), Graham Fellows (aka John Shuttleworth), Rich Sandling (winner of So You Think You're Funny), and songwriter and Daniel Kitson accompanist Gavin Osborn. Robin is, of course, the genial and brainy host. Book here.
Banter is returning to Radio 4 for its belated third series in April, and the recording dates, soon to be confirmed, will be at London's Drill Hall in February and early March. Details as I get them. (Confirmed regulars: Richard Herring, Will Smith and Russell Howard.)
I was on Front Row on Radio 4 last night, reviewing Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story. It can be listened to again for the next seven days here. (It's the first item.)
I joined in the fabulous and shouty Word Podcast last night, too - enlivened, as if we needed it, by the ceremonial tasting of a new caffeinated soft drink. Check the Word website. It's bound to show up presently.
That's it.
Oh, and Richard Herring and I are threatening to make a podcast. Would anybody be interested in such a thing? (It costs a certain amount of money, it seems, to buy the bandwidth, but we wouldn't charge for it, obviously.)

Hi Andrew,
Yes, do do a podcast. I never got a chance to listen to your radio show or Richard Herrring's newspaper review thing he does, but I read both of your blogs, and you are both really entertaining, even if I don't agree with what you say all the time.
I for one would like to hear it, not because I would say I was a 'fan' of either of you, as that would probably be do string a term, but I do find your occasional broadcast spots quite entertaining, and your blog.
I think the contrast between the two of you: Richard witty but incredibly twisted and dark, and you a bit more warm and gentle would offer a nice balance.
You could do it along the lines of the Gervais podcast with you just talking about various things - news, music, and so on. And you could have a bit of interactivity with competitions and things.
I remember the Gervais/Merchant/Pilkington podcats were quite gentle but sometimes a bit too light - for example they started talking abut the balkans once and then said 'Wait a minute do they even exist? What am I talking about?', wheras from your blog you give the impression that you have some interest in issues beyond our shores, and aren't just going to rely entirely on banter.
Mike
Podcast with Herring? Yes please!
Great - would be fantastic if you did a podcast with the Herring. Yours are the only two blogs I read regularly, just think how much time you'd be saving out of my day! I could learn a language, take up yoga...
Please do a Podcast with Mr. Herring, I miss your chats, they where very funny on te radio show.
Yes - a podcast with RH would be excellent. You do know that there are free podcast hosts out there don't you? There are even some that stick ads onto each podcast and give you a crumb of the proceeds.
A podcast with you and Richard Herring would be cool!
I'd say that it should definitely be free, independent (you're free of the Beeb rules now), and have no ads.
Hosting/bandwidth can be free or cheap.
It's good if you can commit to doing it on a semi-regular basis (once a fortnight) and maintain a blog with 'show notes' to go alongside it.
I definitely would be interested in a podcast and can't wait for Banter's return!
Podcast is a superb idea...
Are past editions of Banter available on iTunes or even that old archaic thing, CD? I always miss radio stuff but would like to catch up on it...
A podcast with Herring would be a brilliant idea. I used to love your banter on the radio show and enjoy Herring's daily blog (bought a couple of his DVDs in payment :-).
A resounding YES to the podcast, Mr C. I'm not hugely familiar with Richard Herring, but always find your musings (if that's the right word) entertaining
I live in Battersea! I might just come. I've lived there for 20 years and I've never set foot in it. Shame on me.
I'm interested to hear more about Soapington Way, Andrew, if you are at liberty to talk about it yet.
You are involved in that, aren't you?
Yes yes yes to the Podcast, even if it's only an occasional one. More power to the writers/performers I say. Whatever you think of Gervais, his podcast certainly showed people that it could be a viable outlet for proper writers.
I'd certainly download it. Your blog and Richard's are the ones I read regularly (Richard's led me to yours).
And you could always look at getting a sponsor if it turned out to be something you wanted to do regularly. (Maybe convince The Guardian to present it like they did RG's.)
Yes please to a podcast, it's radio you can listen to on the tube hurrah !(do speak loudly for us tube travellers!)
Serial killers? Ace. If you want details of Bruce Lee, the man with more convictions than any other British killer, then I'm yer man.
I do not wish to sound in any way disturbing...
I would very much love to see a podcast with you and Herring!
Would love to hear you and Mr Herring do a podcast. Please do one, it was rubbish that 6Music never let you have one.
The Word podcast is available, I just got a message from the Facebook group thing to tell me, I'm off to listen to it now :-)
Yes, please do a podcast. I think you are both great.
Yes to the podcast.
I'd be extremely curious to know how you would both sound without having to consider the constraints of BBC taste and decency guidelines. Do you think you'll still have to rein him in...?
I would subscribe to your podcast — I heartily enjoy your observations, reviews, and rants.
Oooh I do love a podcast. And the highlight of my week used to be you and Mr Herring's weekly review of the papers on a Sunday afternoon. You could go down the "charging for a podcast" route, but I believe young Danny Baker had his fingers, and indeed toes, burnt with his recent poddings. So yes, go for it, and if not for anyone else, do it for yourselves, I think you'll have a good time.
Yup yup. Sorry I'm too tired to say more.
The Word podcast is a real treat for me every week. Looking forward to hearing it this week with your contribution. (Have ye sorted out that fella Ellens laughing yet ?)
Yes do a podcast. You could probably get it sponsored so as to offset the cost. I'm sure Costa would chip in a few quid if you brand the podcast.
another vote for the podcast.
I've collected the unofficial podcasts of the AC+RH news reviews linked from RH's forum, and much fun they are too.
On the podcast issue I vote "yes". Do we have a quorum?
The dynamic of naughty Herring being reined in by "Collings" worked perfectly. The only spanner might be a recent outbreak of sobriety in the Shepherds Bush area. I'm sure both of you could pull it off.
Podcast? Yes - definitely!
Oooh, do a podcast, go on. I also would love to hear you two just free to chat without worrying about language or guidelines. RH always used to say in Warming Up that the best bits were always between the songs - that's what I want to hear
DO IT!
Ooo, yes please to a podcast! Although on past experience of Mr Herring and you, the downside is that as I would listen on the journey to work by public transport, I could get a reputation as the mad nutter giggling in the corner. Still, one way to get a seat to myself!
Oh my god yes do a podcast. That would be the best thing ever. Fact.
I'd subscribe.
Those wondering what a Collings & Herring podcast might sound like can listen, or listen-again, here: http://paraskitz.podbean.com/
I would love that. And you could do all the swears and rude bits you wanted. I would love it so much I probably would pay a small fee. Or you could get sponsored by Audible or something like that. That's what a lot of my fave podcasts have.
I'd like to add another vote for the 'do a podcast' option. The AC-RH partnership is long overdue a triumphant return.
Yes please. You are my two only 'essential' bloggers and I am 47 and a Finance Director, so I really should know better....
John M
A Collins/Herring blog is an excellent idea, and I'm sure that it would attract fans of your radio work as well as people who read your blog.
Yep, another vote for a podcast please!
Please don't do a podcast, Andrew.
Nah,not really! I just wanted to be different. But I'm not. Do a podcast, it'd be fun.
I've been in touch with Richard today, and a third party who might well host it for us, and I think we're going to try one out next week. Thanks for your supportive noises. How could we let you down?
No pressure...
I'd love to hear a podcast from you guys and certainly wouldn't mind parting with a few shillings, if it made the thing a more viable proposition.
All the best
Doug
The "School for Gifted Children" night sounds like a good gig. For the podcast - that would be wonderful. The newspaper section of your show was the highlight of an already great broadcast. If Jon Holmes could come in as a special guest every now and then it would be just about perfect.
Bit late to the party here, but good to see you going for it!
