Jaws actor dies

If you've read That's Me In The Corner, and I know that upwards of ten of you have, you'll know that my prologue is entitled, Jaws Actor Dies. It refers to something Richard Dreyfuss said in an interview that points up the vulgarity - and unmanagability - of posterity. He said that no matter how much worthy work he did for the rest of his career, when his time came, the newspaper headlines would all read: Jaws Actor Dies.

The mighty Roy Scheider succumbed to blood cancer on Sunday, aged 75, and what did all the headlines say?

Does this mean that you're likely to have "Not Going Out writer dies" written about you in a few decades time, Andrew?

Yours mischievously...

He was spot on wasn't he! And so were you! It does sum up how superficial some of this stuff is.
On the bright side, not a bad film to be remembered for!

What an amazing movie Jaws is. Dreyfuss and Scheider have such a fantastic chemistry.

It's like Peter Cook saying that when he died, the headlines would read 'Zsa Zsa Man Dies', and Richard Whiteley's 'Ferret Man Dies'.

I liked him, an alert and honourable man who retained his dignity as best you can in Hollywood; he never seemed his age, did he?
Don't think any of the headlines said that though.

The Yorkshire Post did indeed use FERRET MAN DIES, though they did put it in quotations and attribute it to Richard Whiteley instead.

To be honest, I suspect Dreyfus would be more annoyed if the headline on his obituary was MR HOLLAND'S OPUS ACTOR DIES.

He'll never be the All That Jazz man will he? Still, as previous commenter commented, Jaws is not a bad film to be remembered for.

Fame, fame fatal fame. When Rosemary Clooney passed away, at least one newspaper wrote "probably best known for being George Clooney's aunt..." I found that quite sad.

Better than being remembered as "The Man Who Did Nothing".

Imagine if 'Jaws' was remade, or had been made using contemporary movie actors. perhaps...

Tom Cruise - Hooper
Russell Crowe - Quint
Tom Hanks - Brody

It would be entirely unmemorable.

The fact that all three leads delivered such carefully crafted, sensitive, and theatrical (an intimate sense) performances in 'Jaws' is why they will never shake off the shark.

I'd like to think Dreyfuss would be remembered for Tin Men too.

And Roy Schneider is lucky he isn't primarily remembered for Seaquest DSV.

I liked him in the Orange Cinema advert - 'Film orange!!?!!!'

Anyway, why isn't there discourse on here on Jonathan Ross offending Kate Garraway?

I'd like to think Dreyfuss would be remembered for winning a bloody Oscar!

Of course, once you're gone what does it really matter?

When Dave Prowse dies will the headline read "Darth Vader Dies" or "The Green Cross Code Man Dies". Both headlines would turn my head.

It could have been a lot worse. The headline could have been: You'll need a bigger coffin or something like that...
