A discussion over at The Urban Woo concerned the ace celeb photographer Nicky Johnston. I mentioned that Stuart Maconie and myself were once captured in light by the great man, in his studio, and here, after a quick rummage in some boxes, is the evidence, reproduced from the TV listings of the Daily Mirror, Friday March 7, 1997. I'd actually forgotten that the Movie Club was also on Paramount Comedy. This is why you must keep everything in boxes, as I do. (In case you can't read the copy, it says, "If you've noticed this programme popping up in the middle of the night on ITV but were too tired to watch it, here's another chance to catch it." It's on Paramount at 11pm and 2.30am - much more convenient!)

You had good hair then Andrew, but Stuart's -woo! It makes him look like the guy from Mitchell and Webb.
I saw Stuart give a reading from Pies and Prejudice last night in Keswick. He was on top form.
Did you and Mr Maconie arm-wrestle to see who'd get the bigger gun?
I like to think that, in those days, you used to literally shoot your reviews out of a gun, the guns featured in the photograph. Load up the criticism bullets and then blammo, out came the review.
It was a simpler world.
I spend half my life banging on about how much I enjoyed that show. When it was cancelled, you know how I felt? Remember that bit at the end of 'The Unforgiven' where Clint's coming out of the saloon and warns the locals they better not mess with him or he'll kill 'em all? Like that, is how I felt. Like Clint. On the verge of killin'. YOU did that to me, Collins, YOU. That's how much I looked forward to that show. DAMN YOU!
Blame David Liddiment, BBP. He arrived as the new boss of ITV and, like all new controllers of all TV stations, scrapped pretty much anything he didn't think of. Still, we did have an unbroken run of 18 months!
Sorry, I meant to type BPP.
What beautiful boys! And your hair, Andrew - wooargh! I interviewed Mr James about the time the show was going out, and he was very proud of it. Which is nice.
Mr James! It all seems so long ago now.
Do you miss it all? Speaking as someone who's waited years to get her own TV show, and strangely enough, it's never happened, it must be quite something to get your own gig on the tellybox.
Clair, I miss the fun of making the programme (we recorded two every fortnight), especially as it was on a shoestring and the gang mentality of the small crew was unbeatable, but at the same time, I can barely believe it happened! Because it was on late at night, and Sky+ hadn't been invented, Stuart and I were only ever recognised by:
Taxi drivers
Bar staff
Students
Musicians and comedians
This was a really nice demographic. Joe Strummer told me he used to watch it. And Eddie Izzard. Just as Richard H looks back on he and Stewart Lee's televisual excursions as something in the past never to be repeated, I feel the same way about the Movie Club (and the fact that Stuart and I were allowed to present the Brits for Radio 1) - it was a product of its time. The mid-90s were ace. It's something I've tried to put across in That's Me In The Corner.
Not wishing to sound nasty but I think Stuart has aged better since that photo. You just havent aged at all Andrew.
