Surprise!
Is it really him, or is it a hairy ghost? Ha ha! Just because Richard Herrin is, as we speak, on holiday in Sicily (but still blogging) doesn't mean there's no Collings & Herrin Podcast this week! We recorded number 8 when we'd finished number 7 last Thursday! (How hard do we work for your pleasure?) Thank heavens there hasn't been a September 11-style tragedy in the meantime, otherwise we'd look a bit foolish. Check the link now - it should be up before lunchtime today.Hope you like it. Fingers crossed the quality's improved this week, as it was recorded on my laptop, which, as I've specified, is worse than Richard's but better. (Thanks, by the way, to all those who have offered to help us with the sound quality. We'll make some kind of decision soon, but as we keep saying, we're rather wedded to the amateurish feel.)

I will download + listen as soon as I can. Only *slightly* disappointed to find that you recorded it LAST week. (Yes, I know you are doing it for FREE, bla bla.)
Apart from the fact that somethings you witter about may be slightly out of date now, I thought it would actually be more interesting if you had tried to do a satellite / tele link up with Herring in Sicily -- he could have made jokes about getting locked in a ladies loo yesterday, couldn't he?
(Yeah I know he has also blogged about that in his own blog, but any Italian anecdotes from the "Herrings Holidays" would be more up-to-date and potentially funny.)
I don't mean to be TOO negative -- I will now download + listen to it now, and might think differently afterwards.
It's obviously your podcast and you can do whatever you like with it.
However, you are making it for other people to listen to, and it would be really nice, and enhance the enjoyment of the podcast if you used a decent mic and not the internal one. Please. It makes it harder to listen to.
Re: my earlier comment about the podcast having been broadcast in advance (and that it is currently FREE).
I speak as a person who would be willing to subscribe to the podcasts if there was a charge.
If you are still doing the podcasts in August, perhaps you could consider this ... and some way of linking up with Herring in Edinburgh (rather than recording 4 weeks worth of poddies in advance) !!!!
It's all well and good being wedded to the amateurish feel but spare a thought for those of us listening to the podcast on earphones when it sounds like you're dunking the micorphone in water adn then doing an experiment in slightly weird feedback.
Still made me laugh though. Particularly the John Gaunt or Gaunty comments. He used to follow Danny Baker'd breakfast show on BBC LDN (sic) and I don't think that DAnny ever even spoke to him in one of those chummy DJ handovers that you hear. I suspect Danny had the measure of Mr Gaunt and didn't want to spare him the time of day.

Blimey - the comments here are bit moany! I feel bad now that I had a snipe at the sound quality last week.
Instead of moaning I'll just say: Great stuff.
Cheers for another hour of banter (not Banter). (I'd thank you for Banter too, but you were paid for that, so I'll just thank you for this.)
Is it Moany Friday or something?
Cheer up you miserable swine - it's the weekend after all!
You lazy pair of wasters. Do you have so little respect for us that you can't even be bothered to go to the effort of organising a satellite link to Sicily for this free podcast. And as for the sound quality - I'm so distressed at the thought of going through another 52 minutes that I can barely get over myself.
And we didn't even get a single 'cunt' this week. WHAT DO I PAY MY LICENCE FEE FOR!
Seriously though - "the Elephant Man was as natural as oat milk" made me laugh out loud in the office. Another goody, very much appreciated.
Ian.
I would like to say "great stuff" and it probably is great stuff ... but on trying to download it, I have been blocked by work's internal internet blocker. (It never blocks me from reading your blog, nor Herring's blog, but obviously downloading interactive media is just one step too far.)
I will have to now wait until I get to internet caff Saturday (I'm out tonight).
I know it's FREE (all you peeps who said the above comments are too moany) .... I have also said I would be willing to pay / subscribe if AC and RH decided to earn some money from it.
"carbon skidmark" made my day
oh aye, and it's thomas midgely not james

I've just listened through to it, and the quality is appreciably better than the others.
We're not going to charge money for it. Expecting people to pay would put pressure on us to provide value for money, and that would, I think, affect the unaffectedness of the style.
I didn't mean to moan, or indeed spell everything quite so randomly so I happily retract my earlier comments and commend Andrew and Richard for wholeheartedly embracing the DIY culture and giving us entertainment for free. It's like Crass have reformed or something but with jokes. So hooray.

Well I have now listened to it and it was quite entertaining, especially a few little moments when Herring almost gives away too much, and then stops himself (e.g. at about 12 mins in he refers to a "travelling companion" but then tails off).
Interesting to note at 14 mins in RH actually says to AC "maybe you could have phoned me" -- so they HAD thought of doing the podcast with a UK / Italian link up by phone.
(Also minutes 45 - 47 about Hughie Green and Jools Holland/Hootenany were quite interesting!)
The sound quality on the computer that this podcast was recorded on was MUCH better -- also NOT rustling newspapers and wheat free biscuits in front of the microphone helped a LOT !!!
Thanks, chaps.
Dear Andrew Collings
The poor sound quality does give an amateurish feel, which is consistent with the whole feel of the show. For the sake of my ears, however I would prefer it if sound improvements could be achieved.
I have a suggestion for what you could do, if you do eventually obtain a mic that works. You could use the mic with one laptop, and in addition, you could do a backup recording on the internal mic of the other laptop. If you could get around issues of bandwidth etc with the people hosting the podcast, you could put both of the recordings up for downloading. Thus you would allow people to choose between the two, and there may be a nice side-effect if it puts you even higher in the iTunes charts. Personally, if given the option, I would download the show in both forms and listen to them one after the other.
I love this podcast so much. It is in my Top 4 along with Mark Kermode, Fighting Talk and Nuts. Thank you for doing it. I'm surprised how well you're doing in the charts considering the abysmal sound quality and the way you've misspelled of your names.
Chris
