We're getting there

The Collings & Herrin Podcast (number 7) is now up on the British Sitcom Guide site. You will notice that it's the same as usual in terms of Doctor Who quality. However, we recorded it on my laptop as well as Richard's (in case his laptop crashed), and even though my laptop is worse than Richard's, it turns out that the in-built mic in mine is better than the one in his. (Maybe it's to do with where it's positioned, or that it's actually worse, but picks up less sound and therefore distorts less. We are not technical giants in this area.) Anyway, it may be too late to replace number 7, but number 8, next Friday's, might just be the first podcast that sounds OK. (The material is, as ever, pure gold. The bit about oat milk was quite funny anyway.) I won't mention where we are in the iTunes charts. I have stopped looking. It's not about that. In the photo above, Richard is holding a gluten-free biscuit and I am reacting to an odour that is explained in the podcast.

Excellent news. With this and the return of Banter I'm hearing from you and Richard Herring more often than from my real friends.

On the subject of Banter, I'm a bit confused. I thought I attended the recording of the first episode of this series, with Arthur Smith and Jenny Eclair. Yet the episode currently on Listen Again has Dillie Keane and Dave Gorman as guests.

I'm particularly confused because I thought you used the 'first gag of the series' comment in both recordings?

I particularly liked the stuff about Russell Howard's job at At-Bristol in the episode currently on-line.

Enjoying the podcasts a lot. However, even though I know it should be about the content rather than the sound quality, the latter is a distraction.

Didn't you originally buy some proper microphones to use? Couldn't you get those working? I'm sure there are some technically-minded readers of your and Richard's blogs who'd offer advice (and maybe even show you how to upload to iTunes with the photo and notes attached, so those of us with flashy iPods could look at your mugs while listening to it).

All this moaning is supposed to be saying keep up the great work (and also make it more polished!)

Enjoyed Banter last night btw.

Stephen, as I wrote above, I think we've cracked the mic problem. Wait and see for next Friday's.

Stuart - they decided to put out the Dillie Keane/Dave Gorman episode first, and cleverly added in my comment about it being the first in a new series. The magic of editing. (I've heard the final cut of episode two, which you saw, and I think it's even better.)

Yep - I saw you said your Mac's internal mic is better than Richard's, but proper mics ('mics' doesn't look right!) would likely be better than the internal ones on a laptop.

As you say though, I'll reserve judgement until next week's podcast.

(Can I say 'I'll reserve judgement' having just given my judgement on a public forum? Apparently I can.)

I enjoyed Banter too, although Dillie Keane sounded like she'd been told she was going to be on 'Round Britain Quiz'.

Anything Richard Herrin says makes me laugh. I picture him as a hedgehog that's just been woken up from hibernation and is taking a bit of time to adjust.

Ah, that makes sense. Thanks for the explanation. I thought I was losing my mind, or I'd missed an episode, neither option was attractive.

I'm going to attempt to listen to Podcast 7 in the office, without raising suspicion of what I am doing. Wish me luck.

Looking forward to listening to the latest podcast. I've taken up jogging and they're helping me wheeze my way from start to finish. Joe C.

Gay orgy story in full, followed by the Express blog, where comment is freely abusive.

I can't get it to upload ... I think this must be due to OVER popularity.

I am hedging my bets that it could also be due to crap slow download times in the internet cafe I am visiting today, but seeing as everything *else* I have wanted to read / download today has downloaded fine, I am guessing it is MORE likely due to over-popularity!

Boo hoo .... I will try again on Saturday and see if I have more luck then.

Addendum ... I have now managed to upload it -- it has only taken an hour for the computer to say "yes" !!!

Re gay orgy story. The story was reported in the Manchester Evening News a day or two ago and fortunately the response was somewhat different.

PS Am planning a "podcastathon" this weekend - I'm only up to week two.

I wouldn't worry too much about the sound quality - compared to the Word one, which is frequently completely inaudible, yours sounds like it was produced by Trevor Horn.

The sound quality sounds to me like it's more to do with the level of compression in the audio file than the microphone. I know nothing about Macs but it sounds like you're recording straight to a compressed format with a low sample rate (11025Hz? 8000Hz?) and maybe 8 bits rather than 16. Ideally you want to record uncompressed and at CD quality (44100Hz, 16bit) and then convert the file to MP3 (or whatever) afterwards. Or maybe it's just the microphone.

That said, the sound quality doesn't bother me - it gives the thing a nice DIY feel. (It also underlines the fact that you're doing this off your own bats and it seems to be doing very well even though 6Music didn't think you merited a podcast. But I'm sure that's not a consideration...) The last two weeks' have been the best so far I think, but I don't know why. RH bringing back the oat milk joke at the appropriate moment was indeed comedy gold. And I liked his vague sense last week that there might be a BBC7 - a station for which he was briefly the breakfast show host (albeit that that probably amounted to less than one afternoon's work). Next week's will be interesting. Don't play Girls Aloud.

great podcast as usual :-) You are a very amusing men and are gradually filling up my iPod with comedy, which is cool.

Just been looking at the 6Music message boards, and your comments there. Gosh they're a thin skinned, grumpy bunch over there aren't they? I'm glad people here are more reasonable.

I enjoyed the podcast this week. I'm surprised that you'll be 'performing' it on your own next week. Is there a chance you'll get a temporary replacement for Richard? It could be fun, possibly.

Podcast as funny as usual, making me look a bit like a mental as I try to supress my laughter on the bus. But it has made me look at my carton of Oatly in a different way.
Banter was great too, although I'm with Beth on Dillie Keane. It was like an matronly aunt had wandered into the show by accident. Still shines like a nugget of gold amid a lot of dross in Radio 4's 6.30 comedy slot.

Joe C - I would warn against listening to the podcast while exercising. I was running fast intervals on the machine in the gym whilst listening to it the other week when the sound of Richard dropping coins on the table - mocking those who complain about the noise - made me lose my stride, I caught my foot on the edge of the machine and WHOOMPH I was down and shot out the back.

A cautionary tale for all those who try to better themselves there. (Oh, and please don't make the podcasts any shorter than 50 mins as that's the length of my training runs and they just fit in nicely)

good podcast as ever, never thought of the effects on swimming pools on homeopathic "theory". No problems with sound quality I have a graphic equaliser setting on my phone for podcast which turns the levels up to 11, being abit mutton deosn't help mind. keep up the good work.
