Bollocks

Richard and I recorded our podcast today and my laptop crashed and we lost it. This would have been the picture to accompany it because we compared our 1982 diaries. This is beyond disappointing. We will try again next week. We have pencilled in Tuesday, as well as next Friday, as we part of the "freeconomics" revolution! (An hour and a half has now passed since the disaster and although I felt very down when I left Richard's there's no saving what we said, so it's best to move on. I am on a train to Brighton, literally moving on.)

Think of today's 54-minute conversation in an attic as just that. For the record, and to exercise your imagination, this is what the blurb was going to say, before we crashed:

In our twelfth podcast, we defend Ant and Dec, defend Hitler, share our memories of being in the Bullingdon club and find out what we were both doing on May 5, 1982 by using our diaries. Don't turn off when we start talking about the bouncy castle as it get unexpectedly much better after it.

Shit, sorry to hear about that. I bet you want to drop-kick that laptop. Are you going to compare diaries again for next week's podcast? I still have my first diary somewhere, written when I was eleven (1996). I go into an all-body cringe when I look at it.

On the one hand that's a SHAME (especially for you two who put the work in) ... but on the other HOORAH (for me) because this is the one weekend I am absolutely NOT going to be able to have a minute to spare to get to an internet caff to download the podcast. Although SHAME again because that pic looks like it shows both of you holding up childhood / teenage diaries + if that was going to be part of the podcast it would have been interesting.

I am *soooooo* regretting having chucked out so much stuff from my childhood. I think I chucked out all my diaries (which mainly detailed embarrassing crushes on various boys and one boy in particular which lasted a few years) as I thought (at the grand old age of about 17) that they were embarrassing RUBBISH and would never be of any value or use to me!

Now I am trying to piece together a few salient facts about one particular year where my school life started to go wrong, my diaries (even if mainly full of stupid nonsense about how much I fancied XYZ) might have come in useful.

The biggest irony is that the "boy" in question (who made the last two years of my school life an almost complete misery) not only left the school shortly after I did, but emigrated from the UK in 1988 to Nepal ….. with his boyfriend !!!!!!!!

Yes I was extremely surprised to find out that he was gay, when we "met" up on Friends Reunited a few years ago as well (he spent all his time at school pretending to be a sophisticated rake, and the school stud with more karnal knowledge than the rest of us could dream about) ….. however, he was (with the hindsight of age) quite charming about the whole thing.

His opening gambit to me was: "Was I a complete bastard?" (Ummm, let me think, yes mate, yes you were!)

I may blog about this sometime eventually myself (like when I get sorted out with a computer at home and internet access) ….. which seems to be taking forever …. am so pleased I will not be missing out this weekend, with no poddie to listen to anyway!

In an attempt at understatement, can I just say oh dear. This is a little bit disappointing.

It must be like when I've spent hours pulling together a lot of financial information only to have Excel crash and I realise I've not saved the file. But different.

Blame Robert Webb.

Couldn't you just remember what you said, write it down, and then read it all out?

A thought. Does Garageband save things to hard drive as it's going along? Could at least part of it be saved?

That's a thought to potential geek readers who may have used Garageband more than me (ie more than twice) any may be able to help, rather than a question to you Andrew.

1ack, I found the file on my hard drive but it was blank, so GB obviously doesn't save as it's going along. We're going to do another one on Tuesday. And on Friday, so next week it's double bubble, whatever that means. I am feeling quite sad about losing 54 minutes of merriment, but we must not dwell on it. It's a lovely day!

I hope you were sitting in Richard's garden drinking Pimms while recording the podcast. If you're going to waste an hour you might as well do it in the sun.

In fact, that would be a great idea during the summer. You could point out the wildlife to Rich in an attempt to calm his potty mouth.

What an idea. I am skill.

Perhaps best to record with both laptops in future as back up?

Be careful with your laptop and don't leave it alone for any period of time. I think this was an elaborate sabotage by Ann Summers to maintain their undeserved lead.

Ouch. Sorry to hear that. There's something to be said for ye olde cassettee (I assume you have to add an extra e on that last word when placed after ye olde) recording sometimes.

I take it that RKH's one is out of action, which is why you didn't have a backup?

Did Richard read his, frankly hilarious, diary entries about wanking? If not, might I request that he does so in the new version of that podcast? (I feel quite bad for making such a request, because it sounds a bit weird, and I still haven't listened to the most recent podcasts at all, mainly because I have been trying to not fail exams).

I meant to type "Jack" there, obviously, but the sun was in my eyes on the train.

Bah, that's really bad luck. if you still have the file this might be worth a go.. I've just simulated a Garageband crash to see if I could do anything and this worked for me:

Go to the folder where the file is located.

Control-Click (or Right-Click) on the podcast file and select "Show Package Contents". You should now see a few folders including one called Media.

Open this and if there are some .aif files in there they are your recordings and you can salvage them by dragging them back into a new Podcast file in Garageband - they should import and be useable again (you can also open them in Quicktime Player etc to check them)

Good luck!

This is beyond annoying - I was saving this as the main 'thing to listen to' tomorrow when I run my first half marathon of the season.

Now, as it stands, I have a brilliant excuse for not breaking my personal best time.

Thanks a LOT for letting me down with your entirely free podcast, Collings and Herrin. Maybe you could both phone me on a conference call to my mobile and chat away for about 52 minutes, that way you could make up the HURT you have caused me....

no! no no no... I have an hour long car drive with my parents tomorrow, how will I survive it now? I might have to talk to them instead of sitting in the back seat trying not to giggle.

Blogger, you're a genius. I've found the file, as per your instructions, and I'm in the process of converting it. The podcast seems to be saved! I'll put a new blog entry up if and when it's available.
