The Gauntlet

Somebody has posted this uninteresting video of me and Richard on YouTube. Who would look at two photographs of two men for six minutes? (It's worth reading the comments, just for the one from a Jon Gaunt fan. To save you doing so, he/she says, "i think these two men on this clip are being immature and childish. I dont agree with everything Jon Gaunt says but i do admire his honesty and integrity ... two things these two twats on radio will never have.")

What this "Jon Gaunt fan" [must be said with a complete air of distain] fails to understand is that everyone needs the sort of pal that, even if you are in your *cough* forties, you can be supremely immature and childish with. But only if small animals and children aren't harmed.

I put it to the "Jon Gaunt fan" that they are a big nana with an acorn for a knob and should just cock right off!

>"everyone needs the sort of pal.."

I thought we established that Richard and Andrew are not pals, given the number of times they refer to each other as colleagues.

Read this section of their wikipedia entry:

"A running joke has now started between the two about the fact that they are colleagues and not friends. Both Andrew Collins and Herring have now made repeated reference to their status as collegues, even when such a distinction is not needed. Collins has stated this in a number of blog entries, deliberately using phrases where the term 'colleague' isn't entirely appropriate eg "Way to go, colleague."[10]. Herring has mentioned this in his newsletters, where he makes a point of overexplaining their relationship, even when it isn't particularly relevant, stating the podcast is done in conjunction with "my old 6 Music colleague (he is not my friend) Andrew Collings"[11]"

The Jon Gaunt fan has been remarkably perceptive to conclude that you're being "immature and childish". That is a very incisive analysis of the podcast.

May I suggest that you might want to discuss this remarkable interview with Natasha Kampusch, if you get time? I'm finding myself to be worryingly aroused by a woman who went through such an ordeal, although it seems like nothing to grumble about now that Fritzl has been caught.

Also, please could you discuss how one of the people could apparently see Fritzl going into the basement with wheelbarrows of food, and leaving with empty wheelbarrows.

Immature and childish? No, I'm sorry, that's going too far.

I don't suppose either you or Rich would argue that much about being called childish. Or immature. But both? That's laughable and risible.

People do post some peculiar things to youtube. You have suddenly become very popular on Facebook though. 42 new members of the Banter fan group on Facebook overnight, come Andrew, join us *said in sinister chanting voice*

Integrity and Jon Gaunt are not natural allies: He was censored by Ofcom for threatening to turn up at a listener's house and take a baseball bat to him. See this report.

He's just another loud-mouthed bully, much like Littlejohn and the equally hateful Stephen Nolan.

Just read Jon Gaunt's column to today's Sun. More entertaining than anything Andrew Collins has wrote in years. Where did it all go wrong eh Andrew?

I've just read his column in today's Sun too. Jon Gaunt is paid far, far more for that column than I've ever been paid for anything, so there's no need to gloat. He has, in many ways, won. That's why I - a much less successful media commentator - have every right to express the opposite view. Fans of Gaunty may feel they are supporting the "underdog" because he peddles the line that "Guardianistas" run the country and the media, but while the Sun and the Mail have by far the biggest circulations, it's Gaunt's acolytes who have the consensus. I always distrust the consensus. (Richard Littlejohn, another handsomely rewarded tabloid columnist, was banging on about the forgotten "ordinary people" on Question Time last night, as if perhaps he represents the dispossessed. But Guardian readers are a minority. It's Littlejohn and Gaunt's readers who are actually in the majority.)

I've had a couple of comments offering a counterpoint to Sam Barratt's, but I really don't want some kind of feud between Jon Gaunt fans and Jon Gaunt non-fans. I only published Sam's comment because I felt I wouldn't be a left wing goody two shoes if I didn't accept and air the opposite view. But I only posted the YouTube clip because I was surprised to find it. As detailed above, a fight with Jon Gaunt, the highly-paid Sun columnist and national broadcaster is a bit David and Goliath. Richard and I take the piss out of him in our podcasts a) because his column is in on Fridays, and b) he represents the prevailing mood of those on the right in this country, which, as we are seeing, is expanding once again to fill the vacuum left by New Labour. If you agree with Gaunt, you're in the majority. All we on the "Guardianista" left is do is take the piss. So we will. But there's no point in making a personal slanging match between individuals, I don't think.

Oh, hi Andrew!

I'm the person who uploaded that extract. Really the only reason I did it is because I'm a Galloway friend/fan and I belong to a web forum where Jon Gaunt (same radio station as GG) is pretty well hated.

I was as surprised to find you'd picked it up as you were to find I'd actually bothered to upload it, it seems.

I can remove it if you think it's not doing you any favours. I only uploaded it because I found it pretty amusing - good old Rich :)

I'm liking the podcasts, by the way.

Hey, no problem, leave it up there, Katheryn! Glad you're enjoying the podcasts. (What amused me was the idea that all you get to see is a photo of me and him.)
