Shhhhh

musicgroup

Even though, scandalously, I am not listed anywhere, I am the secret guest on Phil Hammond's The Music Group on Radio 4 this lunchtime, 1.30pm - recorded on Friday in Brighton. (This is what happens when you're a late booking. I'm not proud. In fact, I'm still enormously flattered to be asked onto this type of show.) Just in case you're by a radio, I can say that it was a very jolly programme to be on with Polly Toynbee and Zoe Ball, and to play The Cure's One Hundred Years to a theatreful of Radio 4 listeners was a serious milestone for my broadcasting career. (You can always Listen Again.) As you were.

Just finished listening and very much enjoyed it, though I did think you got a bit of a raw deal. Thanks for introducing me to a Cure song that I'd never heard before, always a nice surprise. I was hoping you'd respond to the lazy journalistic cliché of "The Smiths - they're a bit miserable eh?" that got trotted out again with some sort of suitably witty riposte. Mind you, I never manage one.

I might well have done on the night, Joe, but you've just listened to a 28-minute edit of a 40-minute record. I'm just glad they left my teenage poem in!

I have to say hearing The Cure play that song played live in March was quite emotional for me and brought back how much it meant to me when I was seventeen. Pornography is a very cathartic album, I agree, although I don't listen to it every day anymore, it was a positive force in my youth. I would have sung along if I'd been there!

I never thought I'd see the day when One Hundred Years would be played on Radio 4... but I'm not complaining!
