Why I won't be going to see Mamma Mia!

Because of this comment - apparently taken from a genuine vox pop of satisfied customers outside the cinema - currently running in a radio ad:

"I sang and danced all the way through."

Singing and dancing all the way through? In the cinema? No fucking thanks.

heheh me neither. but you might as well say 'why I won't be going to see Mamma Mia: because it's Mamma Mia.' I take it you're not a big Rocky Horror fan either... I think that's a good filter for potential romantic involvements: 'oh you like Rocky Horror, I've just remembered an urgent and lengthy appointment in Alaska.'

loving the podcast by the way :)

Interestingly, I am a Rocky Horror fan, Guy. But I think that's an entirely different kettle of fish. The audience participation, which I have experienced first-hand, grew out of the film. I went to see the Buddy Holly musical with my parents in about 1990 and at the very end, during the final rendition of Peggy Sue, or whatever it was, some people got up and danced in the theatre, and it just felt all wrong to me. I suppose I'm old fashioned.

I won't be going to see it, though not for the same reason. I won't be going because it looks like a but fat lump of steaming turd.

I might watch it on TV some time with some pissed up mates, but I'm not paying £8.50 to see it in a cinema - ironically or not!

There appear to be two distinct species on Planet Earth.

1. Straight Men.

2. Gay Men & Women

I wish those in the second group all the best. But, when it comes to movie choices, no thanks. It sounds absolutely hideous.

Very bad. Rocky Horror Show X Peter's Friends X The Wedding Singer, bad.

Which is very bad indeed.

Andrew - I'm completely with you on this one. Mind you, I am also put off by people who insist on eating all the way through a film.

shakespeareanmonkey - before you generalise wildly, speaking as a straight woman with both straight women and gay men friends, I have yet to find one person amongst them who would waste a perfectly good evening watching this.

Having heard the usually divine Pierce Brosnan "singing", I can only think he had a huge tax demand in the same post as the script.

My wife doesn't fit into that second group as she'd much rather see a film where someone has their face torn off than a film like Mamma Mia

Anyone singing and dancing near me (at ANY movie) would soon be wearing my Kia-Ora and Butterkist.

This just prompted me to ask my girlfriend if she sung and/or danced when she went to see it with her mum (I was er, busy). She said 'of course - everyone was singing'. I'm shocked and embarrassed - I'm marrying this woman next year.

It's not the comment that puts me off the movie, it's the wanky poster I am confronted with at every bus stop in town - You know the one I mean? The 'dream cast' line-up all looking cheerful with Pierce Brosnan and his fake grin! It's 'Fetch me my Turkish slippers because my toes are curling' time!!

I remember going to see U2's Rattle & Hum at the Empire Liecester Sq and all these people were dancing! It was completely bizarre!

I've seen it! I was bored while travelling through Carlisle and saw it that night. I like musicals and I like Mamma Mia on stage but the film is shite. Don't listen to people!! It's pretty dire.

The singing is average and the film itself is so camp it felt seedy. Love the musical, hate the film.

Ergh!

This looks like the worst film ever to me. There is no way on this Earth I would ever go to see it.

Further to the comment about Rattle and Hum, I had a similar experience when I saw Led Zeppelin's The Song Remains The Same at the cinema when it was first released. No dancing but the audience were clapping, and not just at the end of the songs, but after at least one of Jimmy Page's solos.
