Down with sweet shops!

Wow. People. So, Richard and I did our second ever gig together last night, at the Cross Kings pub in regenerated Kings Cross in London, once a pit of Satan, now a place of art galleries and piazzas and nice pubs and restaurants where Guardian readers are welcome. The result is Collings & Herring Podcast Number 31 - live! It should be up later this morning, if a small technical hitch can be overcome in my cyber-workshop. The recording certainly came out, there's just a slight problem in loading it up.

This top evening was all down to the anti-sweatshop charity No Sweat, who organised the gig, and allowed us to support their excellent cause by mocking it (and thus, ourselves) from the stage at what was a packed gig. Luckily, a number of people in the audience were podcast fans and knew what was going on: ie two men in their forties sitting onstage with a laptop open on another chair in front of them, making things up about some news stories in the day's newspapers and then insisting on taking a poor photograph of them at the end using the very same laptop. The other Guardian readers and tattooed 80s-style lefties seemed to get into the spirit of it straight away. It was a fun night. In the podcast you will hear that we attempt to discuss the departure of Ruth Kelly from Manchester, the arrival of Paul McCartney in Israel and other pertinent issues of topicality, but get sidetracked by Constantine's breasts and people shouting things out, as people do in pubs. A great night was had by all, except the small children employed to make Richard's trainers. You can even hear us going on stage, and going off again at the end, like some bootleg.

Even though the podcast hasn't loaded yet, I will come clean and admit that we had to cut a little bit from the show, for reasons of potential libel. (I am so good at editing, you'll never notice.) If you were there, you will know what this was. If not, you can have fun imagining it. Let me know what you think. Oh, and here is a picture of us.

Thanks again to Neil and No Sweat for having us on.

To be fair I think it's a good idea that you did cut out that section. I honestly never knew that about our future head of state. Nor did I know you could pay for 1 legged transexual prostitutes by credit card.

Still, whatever turns him on.

I was there last night - standing room only - good work chaps! No small amount of vanity means that -however blurred - I'm quietly pleased that I can see myself in the pic.
A most entertaining evening - thank you both and to your support.
Damn but I'm tired now...

Really enjoyed last night. You guys should make a regular thing of it. I'd go.
It's an interesting standup
(sitdown?) subgenre for the noughties age....

I tried to go! I kind of assumed that "sold out" on wegottickets didn't actually mean "sold out" in real life, damnit!

But it was only 20 minutes walk from my flat so I didn't travel far. Looking forward to hearing it in a bit!

I adore these podcasts, but really don't think this is the way forward. Richard becomes much coarser and less witty after he's had a couple of drinks down him. And the constant barrage of cretinous heckles just became tiresome in the end. (Clearly, the only reason the first live effort worked was because was no-one was inebriated at the time.)

On a brighter note, I thought you did a sterling job of keeping the whole thing together, Andrew. I was right at the front, and could see the strain on your face as you kept trying to pull it back. The wheels threatened to come off at several points, and you stopped it from being a total wreck.

Oh, by the way, my missus and I think you should switch over to Purina One Balance. We’ve got three cats and they’re all mad for it. It’s full of good stuff – meat, carrots, stuff like that - and it actually flags up the moisture count on the packet.

I wasn't there last night. It was great. Fortunately I live over 400 miles away so didn't have to walk far to not go.

Christ!

Talk about a bloody love-in, with the comments.

SOME OF US COULDN'T BE THERE...STOP RUBBING IT IN and enough with the 'I hope you are cutting out the bit where you said [proceed to put bit that they are hoping you cut out here], let all us lesser mortals enjoy the damn podcast first.

Bloody Spoilers!

Rest assured, the majority who weren't there last night: the bit that the lawyers demanded we cut out was literally a few seconds long. In the madness and hubbub you won't even hear the join. I've checked it. Richard, who would take anyone on in court and go down in flames in the defence of freedom of speech, thinks I am like Stalin. But he won't be saying that when we're not in prison.

Oooh, I got into the photo!

By the way, my cat eats Iams and she'd beat the shit out of your cat.

I loved listening to this one - wish I could have been there! I agree with the comment above though - I don't think you should do them live too often, these lives ones (in all their poor audio quality lovliness) would then not be so special.

So what cat food was it? You have to tell us so we don't go out and buy that brand!

Btw, here's a link to a funny cat video:

Thanks guys!

You ARE like Stalin.

Am I the only one that wasn't too impressed with this one? A combination of the drink on Richard, and a drunk audience made it too much like a standup show than a classic podcast.
I enjoyed the last live show, but that was made up of fans of the podcast rather than just drunk Guardian readers.
I realise that I will be lambasted for these comments, if they make it through Stalin, but roll on next week back in the attic.

Don't feed IAMS! Nasty company. Just google "IAMS cruelty" and you'll see what I'm talking about. Royal Canin is the food of choice for all whoopass cats out there!

Oh and I enjoyed the podcast of course :)

How did the cat food thing resolve itself?

Hi Andrew and bloggers, loved the podcast (especially the atrocious sound quality).

Just a small point, but one worth mentioning I think. King's Cross (does anyone else remember the 'failed' indie rock group King's X?) is now home to Guardian *writers* and not just Guardian *readers*. The writers are about to move to this lovely building, the lucky blighters: http://www.kingsplace.co.uk/

and it is also a great venue for interesting music/art happenings.

I thought the same as Andrew, I had a vision of King's Cross with on-tap drugs and hos, but it was all glass and sculpture and well-behaved middle class art types. Well done King's Cross.
