He was the egg man

In an interview in today's Mail On Sunday, Nigella Lawson revealed that her husband Charles Saatchi lost four stone in nine months by eating nothing but nine eggs a day, either boiled or scrambled. ("He ate three eggs for breakfast, three eggs for lunch and three eggs for supper.")
In more important news, Paul Newman has died, aged 83, of cancer. I couldn't help but think of him when listening to the stupid nine-egg story on the radio news today. He ate 50, or at least his character did in Cool Hand Luke, and I believed he did it, even though he didn't. Newman was one of my first favourite movie stars as a kid, even before Gene Hackman, mostly based on Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid, but I also saw him in, I think, Harper at my Nan's, and of course, in Cool Hand Luke. I got to meet Robert Redford, but never Newman. He once said that he would have died penninless if his eyes had turned brown. Never underestimate a face in Hollywood. The Brando who never got fat; the Dean who never crashed his car. RIP.
That classic scene from Cool Hand Luke, then:

I’ll never forget “Cool Hand Luke”. When I first saw it I’d never seen anything like it before, even though it was already 30 years old. Thanks Mr Newman.
"The Brando who never got fat; the Dean who never crashed his car" the best description i´ve read of how great a star Paul Newman was. Thanks Andrew.
Very sad, a truly great man.
Sad Day
Great Man
Great Actor
A True Hollywood Legend
I am looking forward to seeing some of his films again, when they start the ole BBC2 saturday double bill tribute of probably Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid and Cool Hand Luke.
You can even catch Numan tonight teaching Tom Cruise a thing or two about pool, women and life in
Scorsese's The Colour Of Money on BBC1 at 11.20.
And then if you have Sky,,TCM are showing The Drowning Pool on Thur at 9pm. This is the sequel to Harper, I can't say I have seen either.
Both of these were both pre-scheduled and in my TV guide/Sky Listings.
It's the Hudsucker Proxy for me: "We don't crawl here at Hudcuker industries".
Favourite salad dressing, anyone? Mine was Ranch.
A diet of nothing but eggs requires never having an open flame nearby. Health and Safety regulation.
I hope this isn't an inappropriate aside for this thread but I was on holiday in Sardinia when Paul's death was announced over the news there.
That night on an Italian TV station they broadcast 'The Sting' which is probably (one of) my favourite film(s) I have ever seen - 'favourite films' change I know, but this one is always 'up there' when others fall by the wayside.
However it was dubbed in Italian and had no subtitles, but after about 15 minutes in I realized that I didn't care and knew the film so intimately that a small thing like 'words' didn't matter and watched it right to the end. Even Laughing at the bits where normally you would require the play on words (the mis-pronunciation of Doyle Lonnegan's name or the 'ya dig?' comment which was entirely lost in Italian).
Whether it is more of a reflection on the director or the actor I don't know, but Paul Newman and Robert Redford's films are nearly always enduring or at least 'comfort' films (the ones where you watch them again and again because you can find nothing new to watch at the time).
Rest in Peace Mr Newman.
