Film 24 with Mark Kermode

News24Oct31

This is me, on what used to be called News 24, talking about a film that everybody else has already talked about: Quantum Of Solace. I enjoyed "having" Gavin Esler, as he really seems to be interested in films. But look how far apart they made us sit! Imagine if Mark Kermode gets Jonathan Ross's job on Film 2008, and then I get his job on News 24! At least some good will come of this latest BBC witch-hunt. If you want to watch me trying to talk as fast as Mark (can't be done), it's preserved in cyber-aspic here. (Do you think, after 16 months of filling in for him, that they might change his name on the credits when I'm on?)

Two questions - does telly make you more nervous than radio? You always look a little bit nervous on telly. And is that last screen grab going to help you get on to next year's Maestro d'you think? It's fabulously conductory!

the hand movements and the text along the bottom make it look like this is a programme for the deaf. If we take this out of context... You're talking about the Congo? But no - the last photo - by now you are clearly on the next series of Maestro - conducting the orchestra...

Nice Maestro synchronicity of thought, Anna and Doughboy!

I suppose I am always more nervous on the telly, but it's not because it's the telly, it's because I am sat on a swivel chair in a big, caverous studio, as opposed to a small, cosy radio studio. (Also, the slot on 5 Live, which I prefer, lasts an hour, or at least what's left of an hour after the travel and the sport, whereas News 24 is over in 15 minutes and I thus have much less time to get my points across eloquently and intelligently and wittily. And there's the clips to remember and the mental minefield of knowing where to look!

Next week, I'm on 5 Live first, and News 24 straight after - maybe that will have a positive effect on my nervousness? (This week, Mark Kermode was able to do 5 Live from another studio, I think, but unable to get up to London, hence my partial deputisation.)

Its funny seeing you being all serious and grown up after just listening to you talking about bumming.

Someone should tell the idiot who designed that set to get a desk or a couple of comfy chairs in though - it looks like you're about to duet with Val Doonican. I feel awkard just watching you.

As ever, Gavin Esler has that quiet authority and well-briefed likeability. You make a good team.

Bad news - if Kermode gets Ross's slot, the News 24 gig is going straight to Ben Miller, and he will be filled-in-for by Mark Steele, once he has finished his media studies night class.

We will never know the top news headlines at the time you were on air because of your poor choice of freeze frames.

"Worzel Gummidge is out of office at the moment" is mistakenly put on a road sign.

To me he's the obvious candidate but are we just idly speculating about Kermode getting the Film 72 slot or does someone know something? I do hope so.

Ross was fine on Film 75. Much better than the increasingly bitter Norman. But I do think having someone who devotes little else of his time to anything but watching films and playing double bass would be a good thing.

I wonder if he'd be able to pretend he likes a film as well as Ross when it comes to the interviews though. Actually I hate it when they deem certain films so special that we get an interview rather than a proper review. My heart usually sinks when you see they have one lined up at the start of the show. If you get the Film 78 gig Andrew can you sort that out?

Wot no poppy? Wait until the Mail on Sunday get hold of this slur on our glorious fallen heros. You will never be seen on News 24 or 5 Live again. Mind you, if you are clever enough, you may be able to get Esler to take the wrap and say he put you up to it. He will have to walk, and you can take gardening leave until January!

Andrew,

I have just watched the clip on the BBC and wondered if it's difficult to resist the urge to look IN to the camera, it seemed to me that you really wanted to.

I do enjoy your film reviews (much more concise and to the point than Mark Kermode's can be) and having literally just finished listening to Kermode's podcast, think that you both have very different styles and so comparisons are difficult.

How much preparation do you do before going on? Apart from watching the film (obviously).

Oh, and don't the make-up people possess a hair brush? (comment from my Girlfriend)

You look expressive and well turned-out there. But it must rankle not getting credit. Shall we say, ahem, "always the porta-potty, never the kermode"?

No... that doesn't really work. You should start charging for the podcast so I can apologise financially.

Could be interesting to see Film 2009 in the hands of someone who can speak intelligibly about film.

I can't decide. In the last shot you're either saying,

"and as he came out of the toilet he said to me 'Now that was textbook'"

or about to put your hands to your eyes saying

"Hello possums".

Perhaps I should watch the clip.

I don't like Mark Kermode. His evalutions always come across as too arty-farty for my tastes.

Ross was good and could balance the serious nalysis with some humour. Plus he'll be back in 3 months so best not to jump in his grave just yet.

You'd do a good job no doubt.

If Film 08 on the beeb and Film 24 on News24 are both still on in 16 years, will they have to scrap it out over the name??

Kermode woud be wrong wrong wrong for Film 08! Much as I love him, he needs someone to rant at, someone to bounce off.
You'd be way better actually because you have that ability to make the listener think you're talking personally to them - at least that's how I always thought about your 6Music show.

Where does a critic sit in the cinema? I like to be quite close to the screen.

Actually the more I think about it, other posters are right, Mark Kermode would not make a good presenter for Film 82. He's much better left unchained from such formalities.

But why stick to the current one person does all format anyway? Better still to get someone like his Culture Show chum, LL (can’t be bothered to look up the correct spelling) to anchor the show and have a couple of different regulars to review the new releases each week. And I think you and MK would fit the bill perfectly. On the odd occasion where you disagree you could be encouraged to have it out in the studio.

Hello Andrew, I thought you might like to know that you were responsible for a very strange experience I had the other day. I was on the Victoria line last Thursday morning, and you got into the same carriage (I think at Vauxhall - if it wasn't you then you have a doppelganger). That wouldn't have been strange at all normally, except at that time I happened to be listening to yours and Richard Herring's podcast. What are the chances? Do you think there's a name for this sort of occurrence? Anyway, it was most odd. I would have said something at the time, but you were eating a chocolate bar with some gusto, so I didn't want to distract you from that. Anyway, keep up the good work, but please don't do that again it was a bit freaky.

Unrelated this Andrew, but I notice they're repeating the peerless Mad Men. This reminds me very much of Adam Curtis' The Century of the Self which was on a few years back. Did you see this? One of the best series ever broadcast in my view. I'm re-watching this just now.

Can I also put in a vote for Andrew on Film 08. Much as I love Jonathan Ross elsewhere in the schedules, I've never thought he was right for it.

I'd suggest Andrew and Richard together would be a great new on-screen partnership. Luckily, Mark Thompson usually listens to what I have to say with great interest. So expect that call soon chaps.

Maybe they could completely revamp the Film XX series and have it the way it should be: Two film critics having a conversation about the movies they're reviewing.

This works well in the US with (as was) Siskel and Ebert, and Australia have a really good pair on their Movie Show (or at least they did when I was there in 2003). The Filmspotting podcast uses the same technique and having got used to it I just can't go back to a single person review format.

You get a bit of it in Late Review, but Film XX would be much better with two presenters of equal standing with overlapping-but-different tastes (not just conflict for the sake of it of course).

Film review on TV or radio really benefits from the potential for a bit of conflict IMO. I rarely agree with anyone 100% about a moive, and it's good to have differing views reflected in a review show.

Rosie, that was definitely me getting on at Vauxhall - I'd have been heading north to the British Library, and sometimes only a chocolate bar will do, despite the dairy implications.

Adam: in answer to your very specific questions ...

It is difficult to resist the urge to look into the camera, as the camera is right there, in front of me. But I have learned, through bitter experience, that you look much comfortable if you look at the host and try and pretend you are having a conversation with him/her.

As for preparation: watch film, know what clips are going to be shown (actually, they let me choose the clips), and remember all foreign names before you go on. After that, with no notes, it's a case of confidence in one's own opinions and ability to say them in clear sentences. I like the thrill of doing it live, but five years of 6 Music really helps to dispel any nervousness about that aspect.

As for your girlfriend's question: as you see me on the telly is as I looked when I emerged from the BBC makeup room. They only brush your hair if you ask them to, or if it looks particularly rubbish. I don't even brush my hair at home. I like the hand=pushed-through-it look.

Rosie: That's happened to me too, but with Herrin. As I live and work in West London, I feel it won't be the last time. It would have been very excellent if had seen him while I was listening to the podcast where he was instructing me and all other ladies to flash their breasts at him, cos there's a chance I could have panicked, lost all sense of decorum and obeyed him. Alas, he was just wittering on about some other nonsense. I agree with you though, it's rather disconcerting.

Working in Chiswick as I do, I've seen Mr Herring a few times wandering the high street, but I've always been far too chicken to say hello.

For some reason, I have an inkling that if I saw Andrew I might be a bit braver, I don't know why!
