Yawn

News24Nov7

This is just for Richard, really, who thinks it weird that I take screen-grabs of my own gormless face when I'm on News 24 and put them on my blog. The reason I do this is because I am not on the telly very often, so it's a novelty, and it makes my Mum and Dad proud, and it still amuses me that they let me be on. And the reason Richard even remarks upon it is because he doesn't know how to make screen grabs. This was me on News 24 today in my yellow shirt (I only have two shirts), looking uncomfortable on a stool with Julian Worricker, who's my favourite host. So what? Move on.

How was 'W'?
I'm tempted to go see it in the cinema - and this is quite a rare thing for me as I have no interest in seeing Quantum of Solace at the moment. (I have ordered the book of Casino Royale so I can start at the true beginning of this Bond thing).

There's nowt wrong with celebrating media moments. Mr Mayo read out my email to Philip Norman before your spot on Radio 5 and it made my day.

You were bang on about 'W' btw - saw it at the LFF and it had great performances but ultimately no point. We did get free water, choccies, popcorn thou and a glimpse of the lovely lady who played Laura Bush thou.

I tried watching you on News24 the other day. It made me laugh a lot and I've been trying to work out why.

'looking uncomfortable on a stool with Julian Worricker': sounds like a circus act -- did they cut that bit out?

So, you're auditioning to be the new Brucie? Will you be keeping Tess?
I wish Julian was back on 5Live.

Richard Dreyfus is Dick Cheney. Although you say its essentially pointless , I still quite fancy going to see W. Colin Farrel - not so much.

Oh, and no need to justify the postings on your own blog. Having a son presenting intelligently on live telly is something for your folks to be proud about.

This pic is good. It looks like you are interviewing George Dubya by satellite link, possibly about economics, and he is not paying attention/does not understand. The other guy is amused by your growing frustration. A plausible scenario.

Don't let Richard bully you, Andrew! Screencap all you like - I see there is only one this post. This is where it starts: first you whittle down screencaps... next Richard will talk you into recording the podcast in his nice, warm bed...

Every so often, Sky News calls me up in search of an "intenet expert". It doesn't happen so much these days because I'm no longer 27 with blond hair and the Internet is no longer the mysterious "New" such as it was in 1999!

But I never recorded a damned one of my previous appearances! Having 2 kids now, I can't help but think that not recording them was in itself a vaguely arrogant choice based in insecurity, which didn't take in to account the interest that my kids would undoubtely have in watching these bizarre period pieces (Here's an MP3 player, This is what digital cameras are like... etc!).

So instead they've got me doing a quiz on "Saturday Superstore" when I was 12. Barry Took as quizmaster; Laurel and Hardy as my specialist subject!

The point is - tele is magic. And Andrew, you do yourself a wiful disservice - you're always on the bloody box, albeit in endless repeats of "100 best underpants scenes" or whatever. It's all good exposure, and it's nervewracking fun.

I love it when it happens, and I promise to mysaelf to record them all in future, so my kids can laugh at me when they eventually see them. Ego balloons are made to be inflated, then pricked savagely!

By the by, I used to try and see that daft wee film show you used to do with Maconie. T'was good. You're a good critic. Enjoy your exposure when it happens.

Andrew, I was just looking through something on Wiki and stumbled across this on the entry for the Film Programme:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Film_programme#.22New_Direction.22

Is this really true? That means you're -- sort of -- replacing Jonathan Ross!! Is it true? I hope so.

Interesting item on the Wikipedia page for BBC's Film Programme there, but I think if I was to have anything to do with a presenting job "at the end of November" I'd be the first to know about it! Nice idea, and all that. But I think there's at least one person ahead of me in the queue. If not two.

I dont watch Strictly Andrew, no. Why?

I have, incidentally, just pitched my own replacement idea: Strictly Adhering to Guidelines - in which senior BBC staff dance to a tune chosen by the Daily Mail. The loser gets fired.

At Sun Nov 09, 04:54:00 PM , Blogger Andrew Collins said...

On Strictly, Bruce Forsyth's schtick involves telling the couple with the lowest scores that they're "his favourite." It's a running joke. Hence my hilarious appropriation in saying that Julian Worricker is "my favourite." He is, but so will whoever I'm on with next time be my favourite. (God, it would have been a lot easier if you watched Strictly, Charlie. Why the blazes don't you? It's ace.)

At Sun Nov 09, 05:16:00 PM , Blogger Charlie Mingles said...

I know. Explaining jokes - that always works.

I watch X Factor, which I'm not enjoying at all these days. Don't know what I ever saw in it, frankly.

If Russell was still on saturday nights I would probably be listening to him instead. Is Lilia still in it? I find Bruce too doddery and Tess too dull, and so can't watch it these days without getting a little irritated.

I am amused by the Doctor Kermode shenanigans but I'm sure he's not to everyone's taste. I hope I can say without appearing too much of a loaf licker that Andrew's style would be more suited to the BBC TV film roundup programme than the fifties throwback. That might sound like I'm implying that Andrew is a "square bear", though nothing could be further from the truth, as regular podcatchers will confirm. I just think that, given what I've seen/heard of him doing film presenting of late, I think he would make a good job of it.

You're very kind. Why not start a FaceBook page! (Not that I approve of FaceBook - I hate it, as previously stated - but as far as I can tell, you only need about 25 people to sign up to one for a newspaper to quote it and history to change!)

I have a soft spot for Bruce, having grown up with him. That said, I happily forward over the bit with him and Tess at the beginning of the Saturday show, and - I can't be the only person to do this - record the Sunday results and literally start it at 36 minutes, which is just before they reveal who's in for the dance-off. All the rest is filler. I want to see the dancing, and the judging, and that's the heart of the programme.

At Sun Nov 09, 06:33:00 PM , Blogger Charlie Mingles said...

I grew up with Bruce also, Andrew. That's why I can't bear to see him slowly disintergrating before my eyes. His Life in a Day in the Sunday Times a few weeks back was great though, so maybe there's still telly life left in him - just not on this show and preferably with a less dull & wooden co-host.

So far as Film 08 - change is what we need - change, change, three times for maximum emotional impact - Change. And maybe a new puppy on the set also. That should fix everything.

Someone should tell them to get rid of those Val Doonican stools on the Film 24 set though. It looks crap.

They don't give you long to review 3 films - just over 7 minutes. Do you have to practice so you don't run over (or under)?

It's me here (the anonymous Wiki tipster, a long time Lee and Herring fan and podcast listener from day 1).

I wonder who put that on Wikipedia then if it is totally untrue? Have you heard nothing at all about this Andrew?

However, I'm posting to voice my slight irritation with the fact that they give you such a small amount of time when you're filling in for Kermode. You got about 24 minutes this week. Kermode usually gets about double that, most of which is taken up by him and Mayo saying "hello" to members of Fairport Convention. What gives? Can't you ask for a bit more time? It's getting silly now.

Charlie: Lilia went out of Strictly in week six, I'm afraid, as her partner was the clodhopping Don Warrington of Rising Damp fame. He seemed like a nice chap, so the audience kept him in for a bit, just as they are keeping John Sergeant in now, even though he is by far the worst dancer out of the starting sixteen. That's the way, though, isn't it? It's what separated Maestro from Strictly, which was judged by the judges and not the viewers. It's hard to imagine how one of either Tom Chambers or Cherie Lunghi won't won. My favourite is Jodie Kidd.

Anonymous: please put a name at the end of your posts. Doesn't have to be your real name, but I don't know total anonymity. As for the time difference between Mark and whoever fills in for him, I think what happens is that, in a normal week, Mark is so popular and dug in with the listeners, they make sure he gets a good crack of the whip. However, when a deputy is in, whether it's me or James King or whoever else, if a decent interviewee is in before us, or a big story breaks, they push us back. On Friday, Philip Norman was proving popular with the 5 Live listeners, who all wanted to ask about Lennon, so they let him overrun the top of the hour. I wasn't asked into the studio until 3.30, even though they'd asked me to be there early in case they wanted me with Mr Norman at 2.45. I'm used squeezed out by some big news/sport event - the Beijing opening ceremony is a good example of that: I think I got about 15 minutes in that week!

It's still a thrill to do it, even for a foreshortened "hour", and I get on well with Simon's main replacements, Phil and Colin, so it's always fun. (Simon and Mark usually take their holidays together - not literally, but in terms of time off.) As a deputy, you have to be humble. You're not the headline act. You're not the star. I used to have a radio show and people used to deputise for me. I understand how it works.

Steven: I don't practice my reviews beforehand on News 24. I have chosen the clips, so I know what's coming, and I cue them in, but beyond that, you just gauge it by instinct. Julian or Gavin will has talkback in their ear, so will get the signal to move on - I leave it to them. You're right, 7 minutes isn't long for three films (four actually) and a DVD, but it's good practice to have to hone your views down into that short time. I'd ramble on all night if they let me. Perhaps the short Mayo slots are a better rehearsal. I wonder if more people listen to the radio, or watch the News channel? I understand Mark's podcast is downloaded by a hell of a lot of people, so I'm grateful for a piece of that action.

What are we starting a Facebook page for now - Collings for Film 2008? If you do, let me know and i will put a banner on the *completely unofficial* Andrew Collings fan page...

I got in the paper quoting a Facebook page last week, but it had 60,000 members so that is probably a bit easier.

I think Mayo gets a pretty good audience, I wouldn't be surprised if it was more than the Freeview channel. The fact that it is radio, and on at the right time, means that a lot of people - well, teachers - listen to it on the way home (his book slot on Thursdays is the same). The podcast will then scoop up a load more.

It's me again. The "anonymous Wiki tipster" shall henceforth be known as JerryvonKramer. I think I posted here under that name once before.

I agree with you about W. by the way Andrew: good performances but not much point. I've a feeling Brolin might get an Oscar nomination for that.

While I'm posting, I might as well ask a podcast related question too: have you and Richard ever thought about getting a guest in? Maybe just a one-off thing -- maybe Stewart Lee, but just one time. If nothing else, it would be interesting to see how a third person changes the dynamic. If it was Lee, you and he could compare notes on Richard as a partner. It would be like Rob Newman and Frank Skinner critiquing David Baddiel.

I'm now imagining what a comedy duo consisting of Baddiel and Herring would be like -- who would be the Andrew Ridgeley there?

If J-Ro is to be ousted from Film '08, surely his brother Paul would be a good replacement. I find him quite unpleasant and don't have much time for his reviews BUT it would be a great "Screw You" from the Beeb to their detractors. "Don't like Jonathan Ross eh? Well here's his bloody brother! Stick THAT up your Daily Mail holes and sniff it! Bwa-ha-ha-haaa!". Ahem, or words to that effect anyway.
p.s Where's our bonus podcast? I'm greedy and selfish and dont want to wait.

I haven't got News 24, but now I know it's available on the website, I might watch - I can't listen to Mayo/Kermode/Collins as I'm at work, so I only listen to that because of the podcast.
