Would we let a week go by without a podcast? We would not. So here it is, our promised Review Of 2008, otherwise known as
Collings & Herrin Podcast 44, which we've been saving up (and thanks, once again, to Mark, who is making these festive ones go live on the allotted day). As you listen to it, Richard will presumably be in a hammock somewhere eating a flounder's head, and I will be doing nothing, I hope, except preparing my extensive notes for my first close-up of 2009, filling in for Mark Kermode on 5 Live (Friday January 2, 15:00). As you can see by the pic, Richard
really liked the present I belatedly gave him during the pre-recording of the podcast. Ha ha. In the last podcast of the year, we discuss our most-missed dead people of the year, plus give a detailed analysis of such seismic events as the Beijing Olympics, the election of Barack Obama and when Iain Morris caught the pomegranate juice thrown by Kevin Bishop. We'll be back in 2009, when Andrew resolves to stop being the controversial one and Richard resolves to start being the controversial one.

Part way through it now, and enjoying it a lot.
I was the person shocked by your leaving a coffee cup on the tube. Littering just sounded contrary to your politeness manifesto. Thinking it was excusable because you put it upright reminds me of a theatre trip years ago: at the end of the show a friend put his empty Coke bottle on the floor, and my shocked girlfriend lambasted him, saying "Don't leave it there - this isn't the cinema" In my eyes, her moral lecturing did more to betray her willingness to litter in slightly different circumstances than it did to shame our litter-bug friend.
Anyway, now's not a time for lecturing. Now's the time for wishing you a happy new year and thanking you for all the hard work and entertainment. So that's what I'll do: happy new year and thanks!
What a great episode!
I was thrilled to get a mention in the podcast, even though Andrew referred to me as 'someone' and Richard referred to me as 'a fucking dick.' Nonetheless it is still a pleasure to be noticed. I should have known that my brilliantly logical comment about all podcasts being pre-recorded would appear to a mind like Andrew's and totally nauseate one like Richard's, but you can't please everyone.
Thanks again for the mention, Andrew, but I would prefer that if Richard is going to call me a dick that he would say "Fat Steve is a fucking dick' or 'Fat Steve from America is a fucking dick' rather than 'that guy is a fucking dick,' which would make it more personal.
Yours Sincerely,
Fat Steve from America
(the dick who mentioned the podcast thing)
xx
Thanks for the shows that you have done this year. Been listening to them since number one and really enjoyed them (esp number 38).
Thankyou both for giving up a few hours of your time each week to record these gems.
Hope 2009 is a good year for everyone.
Most scientists agree about the causes of global warming: vested interests make sure the the dissenting voices are more prominent than their numbers warrant, to make it look like opinion is more like divided 50/50.
I was amused when BBC1's New Year's Eve coverage featured a small montage of 'entertainment highlights' from 2008. Featured in it? You've guessed it - Scouting for Girls at the Olympics handover party. Andrew, I thought of you.
Happy New Year everyone! Let's hope it's a goodun.
Hi Andrew
Happy New Year!
I really enjoyed the podcast again this week, even if it appeared to be morphing into one of the Christmas Lectures, that I used to watch when I was a kid, with Richard was going on and on about the sun and planets for ages.
It occurs to me that, having been listening since number one, I've spent nearly two whole days laughing at your ramblings, which is pretty good value for money, in my book. Thanks very much to you both for that.
All the best to you and yours for 2009. I look forward to many more hours of muffled sniggering and secret dancing!
Kind regards
Doug
That was a good one.
Another fine episode, which I listened to on New Year's Eve. I thought Richard was extremely ungrateful for what was a carefully chosen gift, but as he admitted himself, he gets away with that sort of thing because he combines his arrogance with a likable nature.
Word of warning though Mr Herring, I thought Andrew was funnier than you on the Christmas special podcast with the two Phil's. It probably won't happen again for another twelve months, but Andrew can at least claim to be funnier than you.
Ticko
Thanks for a wonderful (almost) year. It seems slightly redundant to say anything else, except that I hope you don't change anything for 2009. Apart from getting rid of that obnoxious Herring bloke of course.

Superb as always. Thank you both for entertaining me during 2008.
Over the months I've listened, I've often imagined Andrew singing these superb sitcom lyrics and thinking about Richard.
Have I fallen in his spell?
Does he drown me in Chanel?
Is he vibrant? Is he hell!
So what do I see in him?
Am I dazzled by his style?
Has he made my life worthwhile?
Does he melt me with his smile?
Don't make me laugh
Every inch of him is limp
He's a 14-carat wimp
I would rather have a chimp
As my other half
But then I'm not blessed with charm
I bring chaos where there was calm
So the question should be
what does he... see in me?
Hey Mr Collings, Happy New Year. i caught the Kermode Stand-in you did today. God, what a refreshing change.
I'd recently stopped listening to the MK + SM podcast because it was getting tedious (it has stopped being about cinema reviews really now and more about Mark and the listener's comments - perhaps in a Radio Show it makes sense, but in the context of a Podcast it is tiresome).
When are they going to give you more than 15 minutes? What was the excuse this time?
Also, while I found the 'straight to the point' reviews great (the 'a woman!' proclamation you made in the show was a bit odd though? 14:07 on the Podcast after Phil W commented on the 'Australian Woman' critic in the cinema for 'Australia' - I could almost here RH saying 'Sexist' like he says 'Racist' at any chance he can) anyway, I digressed, Oh yes.. I wish you had perhaps given 'The Spirit' a bit more, was it really that bad? You didn't give any context of why it was. Sin City - while being incredibly misogynistic wasn't a 'dreadful' film (although 300 was) and was unbelievably faithful to the comic book, so wondered what the reasons you found the Spirit not so good.
Anyway, Happy 2009, thanks for the podcasts. Here's to more appearances on 5 live (Let's hope Kermode gets too busy as he is obviously a shoe-in for the Film 2009 slot; please God don't reinstate Ross).
Have fun.
Not related to the podcast (although I am halfway through it and enjoying it, apart from Richard being ungracious about receiving a thoughtful Christmas present from you), but I was interested in what you think about Matt Smith being the new Dr Who? He is from Northampton after all :-)
Only just found out, Beth. Just what we need - another showbiz Northamptonian to push me further down the list!
Ah, Beth beat me to it! But it's begining to look like Northampton is becoming the centre of all of Showbiz.
Excellent podcast (though Richard was a tad anatomical early on) and as a Chartered Engineer I was especially heartened to hear that you have faith in my profession.
How's the new podcast kit? Got it mastered?
Thanks for keeping us in podcasts over the hols. I got Rich's new dvd for xmas and have to say you are the winner in the nice-looking calf stakes.
Is episode 50 going to be the special bumming edition?
I appreciate your knowledge of alternative medicine. Its 5.00am, the sun is coming up, and im reading your old blogs (must be interesting, I am still awake!) and listening to the birds singing (which seems apt), for the second night in a row, Im getting hops and lavender ready for tonight!!
I think Richard was very unkind to mock the thoughtful gift you gave him as he clearly put a lot of thought into yours.
Ps I am wearing my cloak of irony. It was a gift from the Magi! :)
