Here isn't the news

It's up: Collings & Herrin Podcast 52. In it, we manage to largely avoid talking about the tragedy-filled news by discussing the legality and morality of secretly taking photos with mobile phones up ladies' skirts, Richard's special plan for Lent, the fact that bras used to be exciting, why we should actually have some compassion for Jade Goody, and the fact that, all being well, we will be on Channel 4 News tomorrow (Friday) because we are the news*. Interestingly, it turns out that last week's podcast might not have been recorded using the podcast studio and the nice new mic, but through the internal mic, so ha ha if you thought it sounded better. It probably didn't. And this week it's back to normal until a nerd can help us. The mic looks nice in its stand though, doesn't it? [Thanks to Tina for Richard's t-shirt.]

*It's an item about whether the internet and YouTube etc. is good for comedy. Lee Hurst thinks it isn't. Mr Richard Herring thinks it is. I might be seen in the background.

Hi Andrew. Sad news about Wendy Richard today what memories do you have of working with her while you were at Eastenders? Did you know that she appeared in The Beatles film Help! But was edited out (along with Frankie Howerd) of the final cut. although The Actress who played Ethel appeared at the beginning of the film.

I see. You did switch the 'sound input' in the System Preferences> Sound panel to 'exteral mic', didn't you?

In order to change the settings on a Mac to pick up the external or 'line in' audio from a mic (or any other external analogue audio connection):

Go to Apple menu > open System Preferences... > Look along the 'Hardware' row > select 'Sound' > Look at the top bar in 'Sound' - Click on 'Input' and the text should read 'Chose a device for sound input': Select 'Line in' by clicking on it (should be highlighted). Done.

N.B. I'm using Mac OS 10.4 as my reference so 10.5 may be differ slightly.

i think maybe you have to manually switch the input into garageband/audacity FROM the built-in mic TO your new shiny thing.

Plug your podcast thingy in (i imagine via a a USB lead) and then, in Garageband go to preferences, then the audio/midi tab and switch your "Audio input" to be the podcast studio (it's a drop-down option so it should be obvious.

Hope that helps.

Gavin, I'm afraid I never met Pauline Fowler, although I wrote plenty of lines for her to say in my time. We writers rarely met the cast; too busy writing. I met Mark Fowler, Kat Slater, Zoe Slater and Garry Hobbs at the Baftas one year, and Peggy Mitchell at a BBC reception for EastEnders - she kissed me. (They were so real I prefer to call them by their character names.)

To all helpful computer experts: I did switch from in-built mic to external USB mic, in both System Preferences and in Audacity/GarageBand preferences, but in neither case did it make the external mic work. What are we doing wrong? What are we missing? (I have no idea how I made Audacity work last week now!) We are so shit.

Lee Hurst is missing the point.

The YouTube generation can pinpoint who originated a bit and then embarrass the thieves.

Although such technology never stopped Dane Cook and Carlos Mencia from raking in the big TV & movie cash after they had been proofed guilty of joke-thievery.

So the system is unfair and people are lazy and stupid - boo hoo.

Oh, and the 15th anniversary of the death of Bill Hicks today (26th).

At least the UK appreciated him while he was alive.

Andrew, I've found a very clear video describing step-by-step how to set up Podcast Studio here: http://podcastlane.wordpress.com/2008/04/16/setting-up-the-behringer-podcastudio/

It's all narrated in a soothing New Zealand accent, too!

Andrew

You've not mentioned this before but, as I have no sense of self, do I like 'The Old Guys' on BBC?

For example the line 'I can't tell the truth all the time... I'm not Jesus' made me laugh. Out loud.

I was considering making this my new comedy show I hate but watch ( Don't worry I mean 'My Family' ) but I think I need you mighty reviewers thalamus to tell me if I am actually enjoying it or not.

regards x

@ThriftyBeatnik (sorry can't get out of Tweet mode!)
I love the Old Guys. I don't think its anything like the embarrassingly popular BBC1 primetime shows like My Family and the other one with Gary Sparrow in.
And I pretty sure it's ok to be seen to love it - it's been created by Jesse Armstrong and Sam Bain, and I can really see Jez and Mark in Tom and Roy. And the Simon Blackwell written episodes are even better I think.
It's my only must watch sitcom at the moment, other than the new Flight of the Conchords.
Speaking of which, it was interesting to see that the episode from a couple of weeks back was written by Iain Morris and Damon Beesley who wrote the wonderful Inbetweeners and was directed by Michel Gondry of all people. I love everything about this!

I like The Old Guys - it's gentle but remarkably crunchy for a mainstream-slot studio sitcom. I know Simon Blackwell, and have worked with him before, and I really liked the first episode, which was his. Nice writing.

I'm currently working on something with Iain Morris (can't say what, obviously), and he really is one of the good guys of comedy, as anyone who saw him catch the projectile thrown by Kevin Bishop on the Comedy Awards will attest.

On the audio setup thing - the advice people have left here is correct, you need to check the Mac's System Preferences 'Sound' bit AND the Prefs in Audacity, so that the input is either your podcast studio by name, or it may just be 'Line In'.

Just heard a very positive review of the podcast on Nemone's show on 6 Music. Andrew, they still love you, fear not...

OK, now I feel stupid. Why were they reviewing the podcast?
That would be because Rich was their guest.
And this time, I shall spell my name properly.

On the subject of mobile phone perversions, I experienced something new and interesting this week.

I was sitting on the train when my phone bleeped to inform me I had a file being sent to me vis bluetooth. Out of curiousity I accepted it, probably unwise, as once it downloaded it turned out to be a highly explicit animation featuring characters from 'The Wizard of Oz', actually it was entitled 'The Jizzard of Oz'. I have no idea who sent it, despite my scanning of the carriage to find a likely candidate.

I am female, but I can't have been specifically targeted, how would they know that they were sending it to me? I am not easily offended. In fact I had another look at it when I got it home, for research purposes only, you understand.

Someone was putting the 'blue' into Bluetooth. I wondered if this is how one is 'flashed' these days?

(verification word is fishi, uncanny considering my username)

Saw you on the news! Very good! When it came on, my husband said, "Look, there's your friends!", and I did indeed get a happy feeling as if it was two of my real-life friends on TV! Yes, I think I need to get out more... But it just shows what a nice friendly atmosphere you have created on the podcast, I think!

I caught the news report too. Fascinating to get a glimpse of the Herring loft where it all happens! Thought you both came across really well.

I see the whole report is available to watch online. This direct link should work:

Looking forward to listening to the new ep next week (on my drive in to work).

Lee Hurst appears to be such a grumpy bastard in the C4 piece that I think I'm now unlikely to ever want to see any of his stuff live.

I'm thankful for that link info; although I couldn't get that to work the clip is on the channel 4 news site. That's an untidy room to put on national display - I imagine it's a report that fills RH's mother with a mix of pride and disapproval.

Andrew, I believe your last public word on Edinburgh was that you didn't think you could afford it - has that opinion solidified into a negative? Best podcast for a some time incidentally.

@Nikki - it's a MAGICAL atmosphere!

It looked much neater and cleaner than I expected.

Yes a very funny podcast again this week, I do love it so when you and Richard have little morality spats, and the pictures-up-girls-skirts issue was certainly important to, errr, bottom out.

Nice T-shirt on Richard incidentally. No holes in it or anything. Can't believe it got on Channel 4 news however, never mind the podcast - if I'd know I would've put more effort into it! :-)

PS Rick S - if you buy Richards "Oh gosh I'm 40" DVD you can watch a whole podcast which was filmed in the attic :-)

I have never before seen a news report where the subject is interviewed whilst his mate stuffs a sticky bun in their face nearby. Obviously part of the informal "vibe" they are seeking to create on More4. I have mixed feelings about filming inside the attic. It feels a little like peering behind the curtain in the Wizard of Oz (the non-pornographic version).

Thanks for putting the link up Rick S. I agree with henweb Lee Hurst doesn't come off particularly well in the piece, where as richard and andrew do. Excellent podcast this week. Keep up the good work.

Zoltan Zander the third and a half.

Ha ha, Zoltan, I am actually working on it.

Alex, best place to start with ELO is ... predictably ... one of their greatest hits albums. Sounds a bit obvious, but sometimes obvious is best. (If not, best album by a mile is Out Of The Blue, which not only contains their finest single, Mr Blue Sky, but also The Whale, a really amazing instrumental that will make your heart sing!)
