Seaside special

In slightly cheerier comedy news, the comedian Richard Herring and I are recording our third ever live Collings & Herrin Podcast, at the Duke Of Yorks cinema in Brighton on Thursday May 28. Details here (although it says in the blurb that I wrote a book called Where Did Everything Go Right?, which, for the record, I didn't). It's apparently a really cool venue, and it's certainly one of the nicest towns in England, and we are supporting ourselves, with some solo stand-up first (I may do some Mitfords material without interruptions), followed by the one hour, six minute and 36 second podcast, which will be available via the usual outlets by the very next morning. So book early to avoid not booking.

I can't go.

I hate that I can't go.

So instead I shall sit indoors and eat oatibix and douse them in oat milk, thus having way too many oats.

Hi Andrew, it was really interesting to hear yours and Richard's experiences of not having your opinions noticed or accepted because you don't have any children. I get a lot of this at work, because I don't have children my viewpoint is utterly worthless. I thought it was just me that had to put up with this, but also seeing Ed Byrne's stand up on Live at the Apollo on Saturday I realise there are others. In society now it;s almost as if your face doesn't fit unless you have a child and a mammas and papas armoured plated 4wd buggy.

Having seen the live podcast at the Cross Kings I can vouch for just hw good a night it is!

Thanks for the excellent podcasts,

Matthew Phillips

Re: live podcast venue ideas - I can recommend the Cornerhouse, Surbiton. They have a real can do attitude to stage and comedy and have many pre-Edinburgh warm up gigs from the lesser known contributors to the Fringe. It's also chaired by Tim Vine, who plays there every now and again also.

Best Wishes,

Matthew Phillips

Hello, just wanted to say - having only just invested in my first mp3 wotsit which has, admittedly belatedly, suddenly revolutionised my life - thanks for yours and Richard's most marvellous podcasts which I only discovered four weeks ago. I always find myself giggling away uncontrollably. Love it. Thank you again !

As a recent addition to the population of Brighton I feel duty-bound to tell you that it is in fact a city, not a town. (It became The City Of Brighton and Hove in 2000 when it merged with, you guessed it, Hove.)

Continuing the thread of an OT post above...

Matthew Phillips - your problem seems to be that you're mainly talking to idiots. (Unless you're trying to give them parenting advice of course, in which case keep your trap shut!)

As a dad of two young 'uns, I have to delegate all my opinions to non-parents, since they are surely the only ones not suffering from exhaustion, and therefore their opinions have to matter.

There was a good Big Train sketch which touched on the attitude you've encountered:

(The Capcha word I've been asked to type is "forkinis", which sounds like cutlery based swimwear.)

Will you do an Andy Kaufman-style full length reading of a Mitford autobiography?

Matthew, just remind those gently that disregard your opinion, that you are actually paying taxes that go towards their education/health/family allowance etc etc and so while you are contributing to their loved ones lives your opinion does count.

Also, and I find this more satisfying, when they start on in the office about how their children are 'costing them lots of money/stopping them sleeping/some other inconvenience' just remind them that perhaps they should have done what you did and not have any children.

The point is don't let any of it go and they will eventually shut up. Don't be undeterred.

I get the same in my office but about mortgages.

Sorry Andrew, the copy was provided by Avalon so we really don't think you wrote that book, we just didn't feel qualified to dispute it. I can easily correct it though.
