Up soon,
Collings & Herrin Podcast 58 finds us celebrating the good fortune of the man sitting next to the Guinness heiress on the plane [dramatic reconstruction pictured], ask why the Great British bobby is wearing a balaclava, discuss the entire 43-year history of
Star Trek, laud the courageous Sir Michael Parkinson for being in a wilderness, promote Old Jamaica Ginger Beer in the vain hope of being sponsored by them, and, as usual, act like "a bit of a fanny" and "a doormat" in need of "a hug", not that we would ever allow a single customer review on iTunes to get to us.

I got excited the other day reading the Guardian's reporting of the Sony award nominations when they referred to a nominated podcast done by two comedians in a south London living room (despite only one of you being a comedian, Shepherd's Bush being in west London and yours being recorded in Richard's attic). Then I realised it wasn't you, and felt a bit silly.
You're far too good for the Sony's anyway.
nice one AC! another great podcast, keep on keeping on babe-eee
That picture is one of the most erotic things I have ever seen.
Did you spot this?

That is a very funny photo.
I may be a c*nt and a pr*ck, but I know bloody loads about Andrei Tarkovsky, and therefore I win. I think?
I haven't heard the podcastyet, but I ought to point out that you have mistakenly accompanied it with a screen shot from 'Raw Meat 4'.
As Phill and Phil might say, 'Wallop'.
Jamie, I hope you didn't take Richard's appalling treatment towards your cake-based kindness personally. He is jealous. You win.
I have only seen Solaris. That makes me better than Richard Herring but not as good as you.
Andrew - of course I didn't take it personally, and actually let out a hearty laugh in the British Library reading room when I heard it :-)
I think he is jealous of you actually, because Mark Steel is a better person to be mistaken for than Charley Boorman.
I would reccomend Andrey Rublev, Ivan's Childhood and Stalker. if you like them, maybe move onto Nostalgia and Mirror.
Old Jamaica is definitely the best ginger beer. It's vastly better than that Idris "Fiery" stuff which, if there were such a thing as truth in advertising, would be called something like "Damp Squib" or "Candle in a Slight Draught".
Not heard it all yet, but enjoyed your rant about the tabloid use of the phrase "at taxpayers' expense".
Great podcast again.
I know you've been avoiding talking about alternative therapies, but I thought you might be interested in the new chapter of Ben Goldacre's book about Matthias Rath, whose actions you described as "fair enough". In brief, his role in convincing the South African government not to use proper drugs has probably contributed to the preventable deaths of 300,000 people.

I'm possibly in a minority when I say this Andrew... but you look as though you might be in some pain as a result of what Rich may, or may not be doing to/for you. Your eyes appear to be a little teary.
This week's edition should be interesting.
You are getting very good at the photos.
And I caught the film thing on Radio 2 tonight and thought you were very funny on that. If it gets a whole series I think they will have to drop the final round because I think they will struggle to find new jokes quite quickly.
But apart from that I've certainly heard worse.
Andrew - I found the first part of the podcast dealing with the 'Guinness heiress incident' very, very frustrating to listen to.
Not only because I envied Mr Melia, naturally, but because both you and Richard persisted in the belief that this incident happened while the plane was on the tarmac at Heathrow.
Even when you, Andrew, discovered the information that the arrests took place 'after the plane had landed', you immediately decided that it must have turned back after takeoff!
The Daily Mail report, whatever else it does and doesn't do, at least clearly states that the incident occurred during a 9-hour flight from Bangalore to London.
I realised Andrew's error about which direction the plane was traveling during the podcast. Weren't you listening? He made idiots of us all.
Hi Andrew, another great podcast and very good to revisit the argument that if we dont have children then we are 2nd class citizens and have no valid opinion! lol i was wondering what ou made of The Cornerhouse, Suburbiton of Tim Vine patronage re: 'podcast in your town'.
Best Wishes, Matthew Phillips
Andrey Rublev is boring and I much prefer Steven Soderbergh's version of Solaris. I didn't realise what it was until way into the film...no incidental music...how refreshing.
Boom! straight into the film, no stupid credits, no overarching orchestral music...just good film making.
and...now that I think about it, the film (in this case) much like the bladerunner film is as good as the book but mainly because they are very different.
good podcast this week - shame you ran out of steam just before the end...it would have been good to just stop, pack up but leave the recording going so we could hear you finish up and leave the attic.
On the topic of the British Library, what’s the latest with the men’s room cottaging graffiti..??
Hi Adam,
"Andrey Rublev is boring and I much prefer Steven Soderbergh's version of Solaris."
Yes, you are very much in the majority when it comes to these views.
"and...now that I think about it, the film (in this case) much like the bladerunner film is as good as the book but mainly because they are very different."
Do you mean that Blade Runner and Solaris (Dir: Soderbergh) are very different? Or do you mean that they are both very different to the precursor texts that they are adapted from?
Andrew, I thought I'm Spartacus was very good and you were very funny in your role as one of the "panel of comedians". I particularly liked the bit where Buxton gets carried away and joins in.
As a BBC-endorsed comedian, does Herrin know that you are now officially funnier than him?
ekcol - I was wondering about posting that link myself but see you got their first.
Matthias Rath is a scumbag of the highest order, and I sincerely hope the £0.5m costs from his failed libel case finish him off financially. Sadly I doubt it will. I'm sure he'll find another market to go an exploit. It seem Russia is his current focus http://www4.dr-rath-foundation.org/open_letters/open_letter_2008_02_28.html along with an attempt to spam every poltician in the EU http://gimpyblog.wordpress.com/2009/03/13/matthias-rath-plans-to-illegally-spam-every-politician-in-the-the-eu-with-the-help-of-his-supporters/
He's worse than Holford, McKeith, Briffa et al. by a long way. A very long way!
His actions are very much not "fair enough".
Oh god, I dreamed about the podcast last night... It happened in real time... Wasn't as funny, but then my dreams obviously haven't got a sense of humour...
Oh, you just got a mention by a listener on Jon Richardson's 6 Music show this morning.
Apparently you gave them a helping hand when they got their foot caught between a tube train and the platform this week!
What a hero !
John in Nottingham
Jamie, with regard to the bladerunner comment - there was blog by AC way back about which films were better than the books and lots of people liked bladerunner much more than the book - but the book was just very different and honestly, apart from some set pieces and the character names it bore little resemblance to the book 'Do Androids...'.
Anyway, my comment was that the Soderbergh film of Solaris was better than the book in the same way Bladerunner was better...in actual fact the book was much different - if only because they never evenleft the ship to scout the surface of solaris (in the Soderbergh film) for one, like they did in the book.
That was all.
John, I don't recall helping someone with their foot stuck in a Tube train. As much as I'd like to be a hero, maybe it was Mark Steel.
How stange - maybe it was Mark Steel, or maybe you have a doppelganger out there...
Anyway, the story appears 44 mins in on Jon's last show should you wish to check it out on iPlayer....
Cheers
John
I don't know if this has been mentioned already, but Adam Buxton's doing the voice-over on the Oatibix TV ads. If there's any other work Rich doesn't want, maybe it would be nice for him to send it Adam's way in future. :P
Hi Adam - thanks for clarifying that.
From my point of view, the notion of whether a film is better than the book is entirely subjective. But yes, I think it is clear that some films are regarded by many people as being better than the book, though this tends to be a status bestowed upon those films simply deemed to be great, that just happen to be literary adaptations.
I'm not convinced that the majority of people that have read Lem's novel and watched either or both of the adaptations prefer Soderbergh's film, but appreciate your comment that *you* prefer the latter adaptation to the source text. As a scholar I am interested in the position that you prefer it perhaps *because* it differs significantly from its precursor text, rather than because it is perceived to be 'faithful'.
Hi Andrew, wasn't sure where to put this - but what a great picture:

If ever you could imagine a dodgy, pseudo-Dickensian scrapdealer up to no good then thats your man right there!
