Due to "any demand"

I asked if anybody would like to hear my solo Mitford Sisters lecture from Thursday at the Duke Of York's Picturehouse, Brighton, from the pre-interval warm-up and offered to put it out as a mini extra bonus podcast if there was "any demand". Well, you fell for my evil plan: even one person expressing an interest would have counted as "any demand," so here it is. Please don't expect a regular podcast, it's just me, standing on a stage in front of 250 people, explaining why I love the Mitford Sisters for ten minutes. Thanks to Chris from the Picturehouse for recording it for us through the desk. And thanks to all of you who demanded it enter the public domain. We're calling it Collings & Herrin Podcast 65a, to avoid confusion. Don't tell Richard, obviously - he'll be furious.

Podcast 66 will be out this Friday.

PS: The Mitford symbols are reproduced, without permission, from Letters Between Six Sisters, edited by Charlotte Mosley, but I don't think they'll mind, as I must have sold so many copies of this book by recommendation over the last year.

Well done, sir.

I just listened to it, I thought it was great, if brief. Might you consider doing something a bit longer for those of us interested in the Mitfords?

Do any of the recent podcasts include the Secret Dancing lecture by Dr Collings?

At Mon Jun 01, 03:54:00 PM , Blogger Andrew Collins said...

Can't put the Secret Dancing routine out as a podcast or an audio a) because it's just the sound of a song being played, and b) there are copyright issues that would prevent us from putting out a song being played.

You actually had to be there. (Although I may do it again in Lincoln in October, and any other venue that might invite us to play. None forthcoming as yet. We're not going to beg!)

I was planning on doing a longer Mitfords set for Edinburgh, but to be honest, I can't afford it this year.

Just back from a week's holiday in Calpe, Spain. Among the discarded paperback tat left in the villa by previous holidaymakers was an apparently unthumbed copy of The Pursuit Of Love. Richard's not been away recently has he?

Andrew, I went to this pub over the weekend

http://www.theswanswinbrook.co.uk/

and blow me if there wasn't photographs of all the mitfords in the main dining area.

I was told that they lived in this village apparently. It was rather disconcerting to be eating ones sunday lunch while being looked (quite literally) down upon by supposed nazi sympathisers.

Anyway, I'd just like to thank you because I was able to name them all when asked 'who are all these girls?'...not that I could add much to that (apart from remembering one went and set up a cocktail bar in Florida and even then I wasn't sure which one that was).

So if you're ever passing, pop in and pay homage ;)

You can visit the graves of Nancy, Unity, Pamela and Diana Mitford in the cemetary of Swinbrook Church, too. I made that pilgrimage but didn't have time to go to the pub. Drove past neighbouring Asthall Manor, though, which is where the family lived before moving to Swinbrook House.

Decca ran the cocktail bar at an Italian restaurant in Florida with her husband Esmond.

Incidentally, the pub in Dersingham in Norfolk where birding guru Dave and I went was on the edge of the Sandringham estate and had old photos of the Royal Family with Kaiser Bill (their cousin), taken before the First World War.

Thanks for this :) It'll be nice to have an introduction from someone who's clearly passionate about the subject.

Bum bum bum big hairy bums. Sorry AC. I blame you for being too entertaining and interesting for me to contemplate getting my camera out at that stage. Don't tell Mr H I said that though, he'll think I'm crazy.

Brilliant, just listened to it. I feel very enligtened. Is there a recording of Richards routine as well? Or is he too snobbish to let us hear that?

Connor

At Tue Jun 02, 07:06:00 AM , Blogger Andrew Collins said...

Not snobbish, Connor. He's a professional comedian and does stand-up for a living. If he put out every 20 minutes of stand-up he did, it would reduce some of the material's usefulness (and he was trying out some new material on Thursday that may find its way into his Edinburgh show, once honed). My Mitfords thing is an experimental sideline - a bit of fun at this stage - and I'm happy for people to hear it. I don't go out and do versions of it for my job. I hope that makes sense of it. (The Q&A is different, and may find its way onto a DVD at some point.)

Andrew

Is there info re Lincoln in October on either your site or Richard's only I haven't seen anything? Will definitely book up as missed seeing you in Brighton.

Am going to email the Glee Club in Birmingham to see if they'll book you - I know Richard's appeared there. How gushing do you want me to be?

Andrew,

I think the Pankhurst sisters run the Mitfords a close second for the 'interesting sisters' award. Of Emmeline Pankhurst's three daughters, one became a Communist, one moved to Australia and set up a fascist organisation, and a third moved to America, became an evangelical Christian and wrote books about the Second Coming (the return of Jesus, not the Stone Roses' underappreciated album).

At Tue Jun 02, 11:33:00 AM , Blogger Andrew Collins said...

Good effort from the Pankhursts, there. But only three?

The Stone Roses' underappreciated album was rightly underappreciated, as there wasn't a lot to appreciate on it, was there?

I like the moment where you say "And if I could dig them up... I wouldn't." Did you lose yourself there slightly? Perhaps being manipulated from offstage by teh Herrin before coming to your senses?

A moment of clarity.

And for anyone who was there and wonders where the single utterance of the word "cunt"* has gone, I edited it out, as I might like my mum to hear this one.

Hi Andrew,

Really enjoyed listening as ever to the live podcast and your mitfords routine, excellent.

i have emailed my local small theatre, The Cornerhouse, in Surbiton as to whether they would like to book you both to do the live podcast there.

It is a great venture, a small theatre with a real can do attitude to theatre, comedy and music and host many Edinburgh previews every year. Incidentally, Tim Vine is a patron of the venue.

If they are keen i have asked them to interview either yourself or Richard - i guess that's how we go about it? Hope this is ok, I'm sure lots of the nerd army are requesting local gigs!

Best Wishes,

Matthew Phillips

It's obviously still early doors for the Lincoln Comedy Festival, but I'm sure they'll be grateful for the early interest.

Thanks, JC. Let's make that link even easier. (Apologies for the repeated erroneous reference in our biog to an non-existent book called Where Did Everything Go Right? - maybe they'll change it.)

Enjoyed the podcast, Andrew. Couldn't help but think that you did yourself a disservice by rushing to introduce Richard at the end though.

Felt a bit like you didn't think you'd get any applause yourself and was instead trying to pass the buck and avoid embarassment? :-)

I am nothing if not realistic, Hudders!

It may interested you to know that the very first thing I did as an adult (midnight this morning) was listen to the Mitford sisters podcast

I can't say I planned that to happen, it just did. Thanks for a great introduction!

A bit (well, completely) off-topic, but has anyone else noticed that Chris Packham is slipping Smiths song titles into Springwatch every night?

It was nice to hear Andrew getting a chance to indulge himself, outside the strictures of Richard's podcast bullying.

Of course, Richard's free to talk for weeks on end about Gary Sparrow, Neanderthals or whatever else he's watched on TV that week and taken a passing fancy too.

The bullying's still pretty funny though!

Oh yeah! That was a Smiths reference.

If he slip in 'Goshawk in a coma' I'm just going to write his name in big letters on the European election ballot paper.

Wow, the Mitford sisters are actually interesting! I endeavor to read about them now Andrew, thank you for showing why it is you're so obsessed with them. I never bothered to read about them previously because they never sounded as interesting when you mentioned them on the usual podcast...

At Thu Jun 04, 01:43:00 PM , Blogger Dominic said...

this may sound silly, but I won't be listening to the extra podcast, because I'd like to get the chance to see Andrew perform the material live, or am I missing the point somewhere?

At Thu Jun 04, 01:50:00 PM , Blogger Andrew Collins said...

Fair enough. (You can see it live in Lincoln in October, and we've had some interest from other venues in other towns. I might see if I can barge in and do it in Edinburgh while we're up there. We'll see.)

Just out of curiosity, I'm sure it's not the first time you've been asked, given the well-known nature of your obsession, but do you have Luke Haines' song 'The Mitford Sisters' in your collection, Andrew?

At Thu Jun 11, 08:03:00 AM , Blogger Andrew Collins said...

Got that one on Das Capital, yes. I raised it with Luke Haines backstage at the Bloomsbury at Christmas - confessing to him my obsession as I had him down as a fellow traveller - and he told me that, of course, it's not about the Mitford Sisters. Bastard.
