Extra

This extra, bonus, doesn't-really-count Collings & Herrin Podcast 72a is actually an exclusive, free chapter from my new audiobook - not sure if I've mentioned it - Where Did It All Go Right?, exclusively and supportively introduced by Richard Herring. If you like the extract, the audiobook is available to buy from Go Faster Stripe.

If like me you don't read as much as you'd like to, this is perfect.
It's entertaining, happy and you can do it with you eyes closed. Perfect.

I know I sound foolish even as I type this, but I never assumed that an audio book was recorded by you actually reading from the book. I had assumed the book was transposed into script form to make it easier to read first. Don't worry, I pity myself too.

That may well be true when Robert Powell is reading Frederick Forsyth, but this was an indie production, with low overheads, and since it was my book, which I know very well, and since I was literally abridging it with a pencil as we went along (to ensure it would fit onto a small number of discs, thus keeping the costs down - not an issue if you a big publisher), it worked out perfectly. I doubt I will ever be employed to read out of a Frederick Forsyth, but if I am, I rather expect to be given a script.

You now have an insight into how it's done when you are trying to beat The Man.

Having now heard the whole reading with diary chapters slotted in I jut want to say ta very much for doing it. Hope sales are good enough for you to do the other two as well some time.

Beating the man, eh?

How many men could you beat off at once?

It was interesting to see the 'alien colonisation of Northampton for its ample free parking' publicity video, that you mention in WDIAGR, appearing on "You Have Been Watching..." last week.
A quick trip to Weston Favell Shopping Centre would indicate they're still here.

How come I missed this, Grum? Where was it in the show? Was it the second episode, with Grace Dent and Frank Skinner on it? If so, it'll still be on 4OD . . . If you could let me know, I'd love to see it.

Yes - the one with Josie Long. Let me know if you find it.

News just in...I'm an idiot.
It was "8 out of 10 Cats", not YHBW.
15m:10s on 4OD.

That was on 8 out of 10 Cats Grum.

There was also the Northampton, centre of England video and tune on eight out of ten cats on Friday, although I saw the repeat on Sunday night.

Northampton mania continues!

Very well read, I'm going to buy the proper paper version of the book!

I remember doing a recording of Flowers for Algernon in high school. I got told off for making Algernon sound like Sloth from the Goonies, which I thought was unfair.

I thought it was on 'Eight Out Of Ten Cats' wasn't it? It's on YouTube anyway:

Just as an aside, I thought that the introductory section before the chapter was about the funniest I've heard you and Richard. The bit where Richard is being genuinely nice about you while still trying to be cool about it made me burst out laughing just as I was passing a policeman (in Northampton!) who promptly gave me a very funny look. Let's have more of the real Richard Herring.

As this is a Northampton-oriented post, here is very local question ...

In your book, you said that your teenage band played in a rough pub in the centre of town called the Black Lion. When I read your book a couple of years ago, I tried to find the pub but there is no Black Lion in the centre any more. There is, though, an old scruffy pub (now closed for over a year) called the Wig and Pen opposite the Post Office. It had framed newspaper clippings on its walls that seemed to indicate that it used to be called the Black Lion in days gone by. Is this the pub that you played at?

I have a bootleg, sorry, "audio rarity" of The Popguns playing there on 2 July 1989.

I've been staying in Northampton for a few months now and they really don't like the long hair here. Or other people generally. I've lived in London, gone on walking holidays around the villages and small towns of southern England and rural France and never have I received so much random abuse from people passing in cars, bikes and mopeds. It's a stupid, stupid town.
