THAT'S ME IN THE CORNER
Published by Ebury: May 2007
The third and final volume of my memoirs, taking us from 1988, when I leave college, to 2006. It's the world of work, with a flashback to my first Saturday job in Sainsbury's in 1981, then on into the jungle of the London media: NME, Select, Radio 1, Empire, Q, ITV, Radio 4, Radio Times, 6 Music etc. Largely unreviewed on publication. The "B-format" paperback is due in July 2008, what we'll be calling the "white edition", due to its more helpful front cover design. For this, I have written a bonus chapter, about sitcom-writing, called Weaning Lee Mack Off Wheat: it includes Grass and Not Going Out (which I was in the middle of writing when I finished the first edition of TMITC and felt "too close to" to include). Nobody really knows why it sold so poorly after the healthy sales of the first one. The media not being a "universal" experience? The esoteric cover design? It not being reviewed anywhere? My stock going down? Anyway, I'm hoping the second edition will make a bigger splash in print. We shall see. I'm very fond of the book, but accept that childhood and education are always going to ring more bells for more people.
